Default Question about dog grooming at home?

I am past due for a new set of dog clippers.......and have been reading and shopping.

I have used lots of Oster in the past (and agree with some on-line reviews that they get hot fast) but have been reading about Andis brand...........so my questions are........

If you groom your dogs at home........what brand of clippers do you use? Have you used others? What brand is your favorite and why?
Have they lasted a long time? Any problems with them or things you don't like?

So I can check them out,..........please give the full brand name--model etc.........TIA!!! ANY help appreciated.........

I have two poodles........one full, NAPPY poodle....and one mix....both small dogs.

I have a standard poodle that I groom at home in between his professional groomings (every 8-10 weeks). Weekly, I shave his face, feet, and tail with the Peanut clipper (made by Wahl). You can even get that at Sally's Beauty Supply (I think they call it a Tidbit there). Replacement blades are cheap, especially with a coupon. They work really well and get a nice, close clip that I like on his face and feet. For Body clipping (which I seldom do), I use the Oster Professional Turbo (a 30 blade with 1" comb guards). Non-shed breeds like poodles are great for not shedding hair but they sure make up for it with all the grooming requirements, huh? Good luck!

When I groomed my Bishon many moons ago, I used wahl. (we won't talk about how much she hated the hair cuts I gave her. LOL) Loved, love the peanut trimmers too. Big fan of the peanut and still use it.

Oster is suppose to be a great brand, but was never a fan. Didn't like the way it felt and how it vibrated or something. LOL Not sure, it's been a long time.

Of course this is my experience mixed with humans and doggies.

I used to use Wahl as well, just a general set that I picked up at Walmart or wherever.

I use the Wahl...I am not sold on the way they are made with the plastic movement...Hair gets in around it and they don'
t move the blade good but you have to keep them cleaned out several times while using them...My dog is a cocker and I keep him shaved off most of the summer...In the winter I only clip him ever other month...These was the best that I could afford at the time and work good for me..

    Thanks for the responses.........still deciding.

I had horrible luck with the one Wahl that I tried........it has already gone to Goodwill.

I have usually used Oster and long ago had a really cheap one that was just superb and lasted forever but the switch is finally giving out.......bought another and I don't like it AT ALL. Can tell it is much cheaper made........and heats up even faster than the old one did. So much for me being an "Oster fan"......

Not familiar with the Andis but from reading about them think I might try it...........have decided to spend a little more money and see what I get........hoping for the best.

I do all my own dog grooming so they get used on two dogs once a month, at least. But my 'nappy poodle' can stop any blade I have tried IN IT'S TRACKS..........doesn't matter how careful I am in the brushing.........darndest dog coat I have seen......and have had two other poodles...........

If ANYONE even knows anyone that has used an Andis........please post........ I know nothing about them....other than online.

Madhen.........had a friend that had a chow........he clipped his own. He said it wasn't bad but again...........with good clippers.
He probably left him about an inch or more long in the summer and more hair around the head.........he sure looked cute when all clipped down.

I just keep the dogs in the "poodle puppy cut" so that isn't bad to do............the feet are the hardest for me!! At $35 PER DOG I won't be going to the dog parlor anytime soon!! (though I have, when really running behind and pushed for time!)

My groomer uses a cordless Andis and she LOVES it. I have the Oster A5, too, and as long as you spray it with cooling spray as you clip, it doesn't overheat. You can also have multiple blades and switch them out when they get warm. The puppy cut is EASY to do with comb guards over the 30 blade.

The Wahl Peanut is a small clipper for faces and feet and is an excellent, inexpensive little clipper. Look at them next time you're in Sally's. It's not like other larger Wahl clippers.

Thanks.........saw that mentioned and thought I might check it out.......sure would help when doing the feet.

I have a Sally's here too.........so IF IT EVER QUITS SNOWING I will put that on my "to do" list.

I have saved ALL the combs from all the clippers than I have gone through in the last year..........and another reason I wanted to try the Andis, is that my Oster combs should fit the Andis clipper........from what I have read. SOMETHING should fit...........I have quite a collection of them!!

I did it...........ended up ordering online after I went to a farm store very close to me and they had gotten rid of all their clippers other than the Conair...........which I would NOT own at any price...BTDT!!

Roads were too iffy to make my way to Sallys...........ordered the peanut and the Andis from same co..........and got the "little black bitch" a new toy that will make her 'dig' for her meal. (she is back on "her kick" of eating too fast and then puking!!)

Will keep you posted on how I like the Andis..........think I will be "trying to manage" before I get the new ones...........these kids are really scruffy looking!!

For the 2 cocker spaniels, we bought the WAHL Show Cut Proffessional . At the time we bought it, it was like $ 140. We had bought cheaper clippers before but none of them could do the job like the WAHL does. These are heavy clippers.

Last spring, when I checked the price of blades, they were like
$ 30 plus at the TSC store. I said no way. I went on ebay and found a seller willing to work with me, and bought 3 sets at $ 14 each from him. After we used the first set, I ordered 3 more sets from the same seller. Excellent blades, they keep on cutting and cutting. We still have 5 sets of new blades in package
The ones from TSC barely got one dog done, and only part of the second dog. Cockers have dense under coats. The white one has course hair, and the blonde one has finer hair.

I would buy another WAHL if we ever have to.
My hubby also does his own haircuts with these same clippers.

Edited to add...our clippers are the kind for horses. Heavy duty.
*Show cut professional* is the name of them. The size.
Our dogs are not show dogs...they are coach potatoes.
I did a search for them on ebay, and came up with nothing.
Closest I could find to them are the kennel pro size, about $ 100

We use the Oster A5 as well, works great! We have a giant schnauzer , we groom every 2weeks. Found a place MO to sharpen blades for $ 4.50 each. Kool spray helps we found having a clean dog keeps the blades sharp. Oil and dirt dulls very quickly. Paid for themselves in 2 times, groomers want a hundred dollars a cut!

I just use an old pair of my husband's hair clippers on my cocker spaniel. She's not a show dog or anything and it seems to do the trick.

And I thought mine was bad..........at $35 per dog.......
providing you take them in every month..........if not it goes up. Can go to $50, depending on dog type and how knotted they are.

The clippers have been shipped...........got the notice........so
can't wait to get them!!! They were close located to me so I could have them by Friday...........think I will have the kids bathed and ready to go...........yes, they are that bad!!
