More dogs than sense....Lucy in the sky
So Dh and I rescued a small black chow. I had gotten a phone call about pulling her and though I am inundated with homeless dogs everywhere I go, DH and I piled into the car to make a 4 hour trip to save Lucy.
The pound had her listed as sweet, older and had recently had puppies. She was indeed very sweet and gentle. A trip to the vet revealed that she was PREGNANT. And in such bad condition that she would not be able to have these puppies, no milk to even nurse these pups with. **sigh.
I volunteer with a group that goes into the rough side of town where we feed, water and give straw to the outdoor dogs. It's brutal work but I love it. One phone call to the leader as I was having a mini-meltdown at this point and I was sent to the clinic with her. There she was spayed and though this is a high volume spay neuter clinic ONLY, Lucy barely pulled through and I received so much personal attention from the staff. They couldn't wake her up, she needed extra drugs, extra care, etc.
She's on the mend now. My Shar pei Hunter is completely smitten with her and my french bulldog Nigel is seperated bc he's just so hyper and she's healing still.
Can we just say, this is seriously going to impact my debt repayment plan!

Bless your heart. I used to do rescue work. I am at 11 cats now and 3.5 dogs (DD dog is good 1 week and needing release another). I have had all the cats (plus 1 I lost recently) for 7-13yrs. This inn is closed to travelers.

I fostered a dog once for a rescue, it was rewarding yet so hard to say good bye. It's amazing how many people think animals are disposible

Congrats, Ama. Chows are something else entirely. You have a sharpei, so you probably know what I mean.

Where are you located? I work for a rescue and may be able to find you some low-cost or free vet care. Won't help much this time, but maybe in the future.

I'm in SE Michigan. I have some good contacts here, my close vet, my shar-pei vet and my bare bones tell-it-like-it-is Detroit vet. Add to that the spay n neuter, immunization clinic and I'm gold.
I guessed chows were very similar to shar pei and I'm correct. Very aloof. She's taking her time getting settled in and though she's accepted us and is happy to see us, currently she's hiding under my bed. I certainly didn't plan on adding a 3rd dog but these things happen. Or so I tell my DH!Heather

Thank you for being so kind to the dogs.........I am glad you do it.
(also glad to hear I am not the only one that makes a long drive for a dog.........but haven't hit the 4 hours mark yet!!
unless that was round trip..........then I have you beat)

Oh no, that was 4 hours one way though I read about a couple who drove from Iowa to NYC to rescue a dog. Now that surely has me beat, talk about a road trip!

Are you sure you aren't related to my daughter
? When she was a little girl she rescued everything & I do mean everything. I kept telling her, "when you grow up you can have as many dogs, cats, kids, gardens as you want"...you get the idea.
Now, she has 5 kids (2 by birth, 3 steps that live with them), 5 dogs, 9 cats...and the list goes on. All of the cats except 1 were what I call drop offs...people just dumped them, she rescued them and now they are family. Two of the dogs were hand picked...out of the other 3, 2 are from a litter of pups a stray gave birth to after she rescued it and the 3rd is a Great Dane that was rescued from a puppy mill. I can't even begin to tell you how many cats/dogs she has found homes for over the years.
Luckily, there is a clinic where she is able to get the cats/dogs fixed for next to nothing and before she finds homes for the ones that aren't staying she makes sure they are unable to reproduce.
While as a mom, it is frustrating that so much of their income goes to animals while she does without, I know there is a special place in heaven for her and people like her. She has a heart of gold and I wouldn't expect her to be any other way
. Thank you for taking in animals that wouldn't stand a chance without your compassion.

Thank you for rescuing this dog that is so blessed to have you!
The doggie in my avatar is my baby Ty. I got him from a friend who runs a dog rescue. He was going to be euthanized from over-population in the pound. They had him diagnosed with heartworm when I got him. I was originally going to foster him but we all fell in love, so we adopted him. My friend and I drove 3 hours away and had him and another dog re-tested for heartworm and luckily the test came back negative!
