Default When Traveling With Your Pet(s)

When traveling with your pet(s), do you make them travel in their cage, carrying case, etc.?  I was just thinking about this as I was vacuuming the dog hair out of my car and DH and I have not been making our pup travel in the carrying case.  When we first got him, he always rode in the case, but now we have sorta loosened up and he usually rides curled up in my lap or in the back seat.  We really should make him start riding in his carrier again even though he hates it.

Yes, the avatar is my pup, well, dog. He's 2 and 1/2, but I still call him a pup. He is a Boxer/Boston Terrier mix. He has a lot of the Boxer's features, but he is small like a Boston Terrier.

If we have to take the cats we put them in a carrier or else they would be all over the car the dash and under our feet and the seats. The dog never rides in a carrier we just put down a blanket and she usually falls asleep after the first couple of miles.

ANY animal in my car always rides in a crate. It is a safety issue. Small animals, like kids, become projectiles when in an accident. I also don't want a dog in my lap ("really, officer, the dog jumped in my lap trying to get at the Poodle int he next car. That's way my car is totalled!" ), or cats under the accelerator.

I guess that I should clarify ~ I don't let the pup ride in my lap while I am driving. DH drives and I am the passenger along with the pup. And, I think it may be illegal to travel with your pet not in a carrier in some states. Not sure about that. I do know that we got pulled over once and the state trooper never said anything about not having the dog buckled up or in a cage.

We can't fit the dog carries in the car. So the dogs ride in the back seat. The cats are in the carrier however.

We'd never be able to fit all 3 dog crates in either of our vehicles. We let the dogs ride in the seats and put down huge beach towels to cover the seats to combat the fur problem.
