new pet ( update)
We went to the lake last week and Alex got a new pet. A hermit crab. Has anyone ever had one?
It is really an interesting animal. I hope it survives the cold winter here. I will get a heat thing for our tank when it gets cooler. Right now it is in a mesh cage and is doing fine. We will put it in a 10 gal. aquarium this Fall.
Has anyone else ever delt with these?

I had one. He didn't have a very long life in our home, I think he got too cold. (we named him "Spanky") I don't remember why. Good luck with yours. They are fun to watch.

We've never had a hermit crab but once we did have a crab for our aquarium. That little goober kept crawling out of it and one morning dh found him in his boot when he was getting ready for work
I have to tell you a funny story about "crabs"......
Ds was in the 3rd grade when we had the crab and we were at the mall, waiting in line for a potty break. Ds and dh got in before the girls and I did....we were all standing in the hallway with about 40 people and ds comes out and in a voice that could be heard for 100 yds. says "Oh mom, I just read the stupidest thing.....on the wall it said Beware! Crabs can jump 10 feet!! Everybody knows crabs don't jump...." There was a roar of laughter and dh and I had red faces.......
It was cute though.....

We have had several. They are great pets. I have always wanted to set up a whole colonie of them...maybe some day. Their natural habitat is to live in groups, so you may have to get more

My niece has 2 hermit crabs, Crabby and Shelly! She's had them almost a year now and they seem to be doing fine. She keeps a piece of sponge (wet) in the aquarium and I think they had a rock or something to sleep on. She also kept a few empty shells in there for when they change shells. Very easy to care for! Good luck

We got another crab so Lexie has a playmate. They seemed to do fine, today Alex went to clean their cage today and noticed they had changed shells. Looks like they had what is called a shell fight and Lexie lost.
She is now one less leg and has lost her big claw. Alex is heart sick. Lexie never pinched her and Bart ( the other crab) piches all the time. We are hoping she pulls through. We went to one of the web site about hermies and it says they can grow new legs and claws. Keep your fingers crossed she does.

Oh gosh-I am so sorry Bart is a bully-they may not be best cage mates, is there anyway you could seperate them until Lexie heals. Lexie is super stressed right now and if Bart continues to bully her, she will not make it.
Since this thread, I have gotten 2 new hermies, and I must say, I love them.
They are so neat-Bob is playing the "switch shell" game this week. They are both so calm, and I am enjoying them immensly!!

We went to the pet store today and got Jacob. He is a bit bigger than Bart so hopefully will do well together. He is much more laid back than Bart is, and hasn't pinched her at all. Thanks for all your well wishes for Alex. She is sad but I think understood it ok.

Yay!! I hope Jacob and Bart make good cage mates.
Bob (one of mine that continues to switch shells daily) pinched my dd last night. This is the first time since we have owned these 2 that either one of them has pinched, so I wonder if he is getting ready to molt and is grumpy. He switched shells again last night!!
