If you are serious about a great diet for your pet, try feeding a BARF diet (Bones and Raw Foods). You can go to dog.com and check out all of the great things said about feeding a dog a raw diet and how to do it. Also, it is easy to feed a dog this way--just buy what you need at the grocery store!

homemade dog food?
Does anyone make their own pet food? We have a cookbook (The Three Dog Bakery Cookbook) that I make dog treats from, but I would like to give them more homemade food. Any thoughts/suggestions? Thanks!

I make my guys their own dogfood. I started doing the "BARF" (beneficially appropriate raw food) diet with them a few years back, and the change in them was so tremendous, I stuck with a modified version of it. I have a Chow who was diagnosed with skin allergies and severe hip dysplasia at age 5 months, and was expected to be on Rimadyl the rest of his life, and to require hip surgery by the time he was a year old. He is now five years old, has a perfect coat, only needs Rimadyl when he goes a little nuts at the lake, and runs a ten-acre property with no problems.

Homemade Dog Food
Does anyone make their own dog food and does it save them any money? I know you have to have the right percentages of meat, etc., but do you have any ideas how to make it cheaper, versus buying it?

I would first research (from your vet primarily) the proper amounts and types of food you would feed (which meats, which veggies, which nutrients/supplements) and then comparison shop just like you do for your own food.

If you get the Food Network, I suggest watching this show. http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/show..._55840,00.html I watched it last night and it was very informative on what to feed and how. Good Luck!

A good treat that I give my dog is when I make chicken cutlets, I take all of the trim that I have taken off the cutlets and I boil it. I give it to the dog. He loves them.

that's one thing I don't even buy generic on. most things i have read say that this is the one product you generally get what you pay for. Our Vet told us to stay away from generics and home made.
