problem with a killer dog -
I have posted about this in Homesteading - one of my dogs (heelr -akita mix) is blood thirsty she has tried to kill the kittens and weezils and tears the heads off of ( and eats them) the ducks and chickens. I have tried every reasonable means to train her not to. I have been trying without success to find her another home. Finally three weeks ago she was lose for 15 mins and killed three chickens and a duck - so I took her to the pound to have her placed - they said that she was blood thirsty and they would only put her down. Bruce started crying and we brought her back home. so now she lives on a chain - she has still successfully killed two chickens while chained. (God, chickens are dumb!!) anyway - she doesn't eat cuz shes depressed and she has no life so Bruce wants to take her back now and get her put down. I am wondering about a muzzle?? Do you think a muzzle might work for her - do you have experience with this - I don't want to lose anymore animals and she has become very rough and unpredictable with the kids and the sheep? do you think it would stay on?? I don't want to lose a kid or a sheep just to see if it would work... any thoughts??

You are in a very tough spot but if she has become unpredictable around the kids too I'd have her put down. You would never forgive yourself if something happened to your precious children or another child.

Yeah - thats what I was afraid of - she really hurt Damon and boy dog the other day - I think there is something wrong with her - she seems kind of wack!

Kimmee, she will NOT be placed if you take her to the shelter. At the shelter I volunteer at, if an animal kills cats, chickens, etc, they can sometimes still be placed. If there are problems with kids, they are put down. The liability is just too high.
If you have the money, you can have a complete blood panel done on her to see if there's any obvious problem in her system. However, I suspect they won't find any. Even though this is a very hard decision, I would suggest putting her down.

I totally agree with Lori. Same thing at the shelter I volunteer at, she won't be placed since she's already had problems with kids. It is truly a difficult decision and I only suggest it as a last resort, but it does sound like she needs to be put downOriginally posted by Lori Biever-Launder

I agree, and I know it is hard to put a pet down (having done it for my Rottie..Diamond who had major hip issues) BUT I do know that the Rottie I have now has a slight agression problem. He (Justice) has to be muzzled when he goes to the vet. The muzzle just angers him more so I don't think that would be a good idea. DH and I have discussed it though and if any of our dogs were to become agressive enough to be a threat to any person they would be put down, it is just too risky.
I do feel for you though...I was with my beloved Diamond when she was put down.....here I was the person who nursed her when she had parvo at 3 months old...and I was taking her life. BUT I knew it was best for her.

I'd have to agree with the rest of the posters. It's a tough call to make but you trust your gut. If you've posted this a couple fo times that sounds like you don't trust your dog with your kids. Life is hard when you have a dog that you can't trust around your kids. A muzzle is not the answer. They come off, they have to be taken off for feeding.... and if anything happens to your, or someone elses kids, you won't be able to live with yourself.
I really feel for you though. It's a tough call to make. There are good websites on breeds around children, although any breed can be iffy if bred improperly or if they are 'whacked'.
Trust your gut. You said "she seems kind of wack!". Trust your gut. She may have whacky wiring in the brain. It happens just like it does to people. and Akita can really hurt someone.
All my best,
babs
