My poor Kitty! warning GROSS!
My poor 12 yr old tom cat! I couldn't find him after work and he usually assults me as soon as I walk in. I found him hiding under my bed so I knew something was wrong. I picked him up and realized I had blood on me. I originally thought he was urinating blood and had an infection since its happened before. I called the vet who asked me tons of questions including did his bladder feel hard. Like I can tell with a 22 lb cat!?! So we drove the 17 miles to the vet late last night.
The vet checked for urine problems right off the bat. Nothing wrong! I showed him blood all over the blankets and he noticed blood on kittys tail and though maybe another of our pets had bit him. I said no way because that cat rules the roost including the 120 lb dog. So the vet shaved poor kittys hind end and saw the problem. The poor babys anal gland had completely ruptured. It is a big raw yucky thing. Poor baby ot a shot, oral antibiotics and gross as it is an ointment I have to put right in the ruptured glad.
That poor poor cat! He was a bit more friendly today until I had to do the meds. Now hes hiding! The vet said this is rare in Cats. Poor baby! Poor me too (literally) besides medicating his poor butt it cost 111.00.~July 19 saving goal for event $104/$1000

Awww poor baby.
I know what you mean, not a pleasant job but he will start to feel better soon and will be back to ruling the roost again.

Kimme ,
The vet said its rare in cats but they tend to scoot on the floor or lick alot if the glands get plugged. If they are plugged they need to be squeezed. The vet showed me but I tell you if I notice symptoms in the other side were going to the vet. He said I didn't notice licking because my cat (22lbs) is just to big to reach his butt.~July 19 saving goal for event $104/$1000

Lol! That made me laugh "poor little thing!" He is definately poor now but not little. He about fileted me this morning while doing the meds. A 22lb tom is hard to hold! But of course I love him even though he shredded me!Originally posted by Dixie

Michelle, My cat has this...and I have to go to the vet two times a year and have them "express" the anal glands. I can always tell when it's time to go to the vets because Nala starts liking alot and won't come hang out with me. Nala has medicine that I put on her when it's bad.
I am sorry your kitty is going through this!
I feel your pain. Most cats don't have to deal with it, but the anal glands are sensitive.

The vet said that since it is wide open and ruptured it should be inactive but to watch the other gland.Originally posted by frugalmommie

I hope your cat gets better soon the poor thing. Imagine how he feels. I love cats and I have a calico medium hair length hair cat. I hate to see anything painful happen to any cat.
I wish you and your cat the best.
