Default Fur baby off to Heaven

We lost a fur baby today to a neighborhood dog. I didn't see it happen. We got home and Boogie (cat) was outside on our patio, sunning his belly and rolling around. DS fed him and all was fine. DH went to work and The kids and I began cleaning house. I heard a dog fight (usually do in this neighborhood, so I didn't think to go look. Better not to draw the kids interest into a dog fight, they get freaked out just hearing it, no sense drawing their attention byt running to see. So I ignored it, although it sounded closer than usual. So I cleaned and cleaned the house, then went to open the windows and doors for ventilation. And I found him. In the mulch right next to the patio he'd been sunning himself on not much earlier (maybe three hours by this point, four, tops). He'd been mauled.

I am not sure how to tell the kids he won't be comming home. I think I am going to explain that Boogie went home to God, but I am not sure. I feel just terrible.

I had the neighbor lady help me move him out of sight of the kids, and told her I thought it was part of the dog fight i had heard, she mentioned that she had to chase two agressive dogs off of her porch around the same time I heard the fight. She thought nothing of it either at the time.

I'm so sorry. What a terrible loss and I'm so glad the kids didn't have to witness it. Did you call the dog catcher?? I certainly would if some loose dogs had mauled one of my animals. Alert other poor unsuspecting animal owners. And small kids?? Are they safe?? I'm so sorry.

the Humane Society is city run (long drawn out city fight, not gonna go into it here), so i left a message on their machine. tried to call the police, they said call the Humane soc. So failing all that mess I went to the neighbors and let them know.

Talk with the owners of the dogs. They are responsible for any damages their animals do. Poor Boogie--may he run free at the Bridge. I lost a cat years ago to a pair of dogs. They ripped her in half. This is why my cats are only INSIDE pets now. I learned the hard way.

I didn't see the dogs do it. I wouldn't have a clue what dog to implicate. I heard dogs outside fighting...as is pretty common. People let loose/dogs get loose out here all the time, and they fight.

I have called at least 50 timesto the Humane society in the short time we have lived in this house about loose dogs. Nothing changes, and the police and the Humane Society really don't do much about it other than come out and pick up the dogs. They get out again in a few days and repeat the cycle.

When one of the neighbors dogs came down (two years back) and killed out Chuiuahah I called the police, showed them the dog. They kept my dog for evidence. The other dog was put down and I got to pay the cremation fee (he's my dog and I would have had him cremated upon his death regardless). Nothing could be held for the owner to pay. I couldn't sue as one might expect for damages or anything to recoup loss, even for just the cost of the cremation. The police and the DA both told me that in this state the animal laws are vague when it comes to cases such as these. When I flat out told the DA I wanted to collect at least some help for his cremation ( it isn't like I wanted pain and suffering, just help with his final arrangements) he told me that it would be denied. Something about property laws that the dog/cats fall under, it's been two years since that incident, my mememory isnt so good as it once was. Mind you the neighbors dog had come onto my property, broke into Chico's kennell and pulled him out. Still nothing could be done. The worst that he told me would happen is the dog that did the killing would itself be put to sleep. And in that case I HAD seen the dog do it.

In this instance, i didn't see the dog, I only heard the fight. So since i didn't see anything, or rather, any dog there really isn't anything i can do. Other than warn the rest of my neighbors to keep their own cats inside and dogs secure. And to be vigilant on watching for loose dogs. I told all the neighbors on my block.

Oh Missy, so sorry about your kitty! Even sorrier about the laws in your state!! Dogs are not allowed off of leashes here even on their own properties unless they are under the control of the owner. If your dog hurts someone or damages property the owner is liable and can even go to jail.
