Another cat question
This is a sad situation and I'm unsure of how to handle it. About a month ago someone dumped a male cat on our road. He found his way here. This happens a lot where we live. We did decide to keep him. I made an appointment with the shelter to have him neutered, but they can't get him in until April 7. Anyway, he is living outside. That was the only condition I had for keeping him. I don't want him to spray in the house. He's a rough young tom and has had a couple of scrapes, one we have taken him to the vet for. Anyway there is another tom who lives in the woods who has taken to giving Elvis ( the new cat's name) a regugal @$$ beating. Elvis is a very nice and loving cat, but as this other cat is whooping on him( usually on our porch in the middle of the night) he gets so scared he pees. The smell will sink into the wood and whats more Elvis is getting run down from this. We can't catch this cat and I can't get off a shot on him as the are usually in a fight and I don't want to shoot our cat. We have taken to bringing Elvis in at night and putting him in a kennel in out living room. He is weak and thin now so does not mind. We need to have this problem taken care of soon. We live in the country and there is no animal control here. What can we do to get rid of this other cat. I fear he will just keep coming around at least until Elvis has been fixed. Any advice?

How about borrowing a live trap from the animal shelter so you can trap the wold cat? That way, he can be cared for and nuetered at the shelter and Elvis won't be beaten to a pulp every time he goes outside.

The nearest shelter is about 30 miles away. They are on a very limited resources. I will have to call them to see if they have a live trap. I wonder if one of the hunters around here would have one? Good idea though, Lori I'll look into it.

Purchase a live trap (Havahart brand??) and trap that sucker and get rid of him. Intact tomcats who fight a lot are at high risk for FIV (feline immunodeficiency/feline AIDS) infection, which is spread via bite wounds. Get your kitty tested. If he tests positive for that or Feline Leukemia Virus, feel free to PM me with questions. Good luck!

What about using something to deter the other cat from your property? I know there are products out there that you can spray around your yard to keep away wild animals-- would that work? At my old house we sprinkled red pepper in the flower beds to keep the squirrels out-- I wonder if something like that might help?
