    Default Puppy diarrhea...GROSS...HELP!

We just got a mini dachshund puppy a couple weeks ago..he is now 12 weeks old. Everything has been fine and dandy until this morning, when I let him out to go potty....and he had diarrhea! Aack!

So I went online looking for causes, and everything I found was about Parvo and distemper, but he has already had his shots. AND he has just been dewormed as well. He is acting perfectly normal otherwise. He is kenneled at night and when we are gone, and there was no mess in the kennel.

What could be wrong with this dog? What should I do? We are kind of strapped for cash right now so I am desperately hoping that this will not entail a trip to the vet

    Help!!!!

Have you changed his food recently? A sudden change in food from one brand to another can be a cause.

Did he possibly eat/chew something in the house when you weren't looking?

I would wait it out and see how he is. If he is acting normal, he's probably ok. Can you call the vet and just ask questions without being charged? Maybe they might have an idea.

He might just have a little tummy ache. I would wait it out and see.

Thanks everyone I am going to wait and see how it goes. I put him in his kennel while I went to go take DD to preschool and pick up DS, and he didn't make any messes while I was gone. I fed him earlier this morning and he ate all the food, and he did poop again and it was runny DH took him to town with him yesterday afternoon, so when he gets home from work I'll ask and see if he fed him anything out of the ordinary yesterday.

He's very peppy and playful still, so I am hoping for the best.

Is he having a reaction to the pet food? Or he might be having anxiety in some way.

Hopefully he will be better quickly.

Has he been gulping water real fast? That will cause diarrhea too. Make sure that the dog isn't being "sneaked" any table foods. It could also do with the type of food you are feeding. Good luck! My oldest gets diarrhea a lot, but it usually passes in a day.

This may be a little late, but it might help!

When dogs go to a new home, there is often a change in their water. Just like people, dogs can have upset tummies from it. When I brought my girl home from her breeder, I was told to get unflavored Pedialyte for her to drink for several days. I then gradually weaned her over to our water by mixing it little by little into the Pedialyte. It worked like a charm!

If your puppy has had a different food than before, he may have it because of that. You can add PLAIN canned pumpkin to his diet to "thicken things up". Also, canned green beans are something that many dogs will eat that can help. Lastly, plain yogurt (with active cultures) will keep his digestive tract healthy.

Let us know how your baby is doing!

I have done all these things too, as advice from my vet. They work!

Hi! Well, as it turned out, he only had diarrhea for about a day and a half, and then it was gone. I'm guessing that he must have eaten something that he doesn't normally eat--and with small kids I know that is very possible!

So all is well He is growing a bit--he won't grow very much as he is a mini AND the runt!--but he really is quite a character!
