Default MY sister got a yorkie poo

last Saturday and he got sick Tuesday night. Today she took him to the vet for the 2nd time and he has parvo

He's only 8 weeks old. Vet says he has to stay a few days and see what happens. They have a IV in him but he's so young.

She is very sad.Called me crying this morning

What is his chances of surviving Parvo? How should she treat the house and his things if he does survive and come home?

Here is a link to one site:

    http://www.workingdogs.com/parvofaq.htm

It suggest treating the home and yard with a strong bleach/water solution eventhough it will kill the grass, it will stop the parvo from affecting other animals.

Here is a snippet from this site

    http://www.animalclinic.com/parvo.htm

    Can it be treated successfully?

There is no treatment to kill the virus once it infects the dog. However, the virus does not directly cause death; rather, it causes loss of the lining of the intestinal tract. This results in severe dehydration, electrolyte (sodium and potassium) imbalances, and infection in the bloodstream (septicemia). When the bacteria that normally live in the intestinal tract are able to get into the blood stream, it becomes more likely that the animal will die. The first step in treatment is to correct dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. This requires the administration of intravenous fluids containing electrolytes. Antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs are given to prevent or control septicemia. Antispasmodic drugs are used to inhibit the diarrhea and vomiting that perpetuate the problems.

    What is the survival rate?

Most dogs with CPV infection recover if aggressive treatment is used and if therapy is begun before severe septicemia and dehydration occur. For reasons not fully understood, some breeds, notably the Rottweiler, have a much higher fatality rate than other breeds.

Oh the poor little thing Tammy and how awful for your poor sister.

A little ray of hope though for her, a friend of mine got a little dog that had been abandoned, she was only around 6 weeks old. Just afterwards she too contracted parvo and my friend thought she would lose her. But the little dog was a real fighter (She's a golden retriever) and survived despite all the odds. She's turned into a beautiful dog! She'll always be a bit small for her breed but she is happy and healthy!

Years ago, when I was a very poor single mother, I had found a German Shepherd puppy that someone tossed out on the road and left to die. Well, this puppy contracted parvo from my YARD (I was renting the house, had not had a dog before, but apparently a previous renter had a sick dog back there). My poor puppy got so sick...he was not eating, not drinking, very lethargic. I literally had NO MONEY to even think about taking this dog to the vet, and I was just an emotional wreck because I just knew that he was going to die I tried to forcefeed him, I tried pouring water down his throat, to no avail Well, at some point I had gone inside to the restroom and took some tylenol for the pounding headache I had from crying so much...and while I was in the medicine cabinet, I noticed that I still had half a bottle of Penicillin V that I had gotten from the dentist for an infected wisdom tooth. Well, I figured that my dog was going to die anyway, and the penicillin wasn't going to do any more damage than was already done, so I took one of those huge pills outside and literally SHOVED it down my dogs throat and held his mouth shut until he swallowed it. Then he just crawled into his doghouse and laid down, so I left him alone and prayed for a miracle.

The next morning I woke up to the sound of my dog BARKING...something he had not done in more than a week. I opened the back door, and he ran up to it. I put a bowl of water on the patio and he gulped it all down! Later that evening I gave him another pill just in case. He totally recovered after that

Is there a health guarantee from where she bought the pup? If so, she should check with them. It is possible that they will pick up part of the tab or offer a replacement pup (from a future litter) if he, Heaven Forbid, does die. Infortunately, "Poo" breeders are rarely responsible breeders.

I forgot to tell everyone. Her puppy died that Sunday
She had him a week and a day.

She said the lady offered her the money back or another puppy. I dont think Tabatha wanted a puppy from her,but I haven't talked to her to know what she did. I'll find out and post.....

If she plans to get another pup, make sure that EVERYTHING is disinfected. Parvo is very, very contagious. Check with you vet to see exaclty what to do. I would use a bleach and water mixture to kill the bugs. Use it on floors, tiles, walls, bedding, dishes and anything else you can think of. Also, don't forget to disinfect the yard!

    Poor little guy--RIP.
