    Default I clipped Chloe's nails :(

I wont ever do that again! I gave her a bath today and thought I'd clip them cause I'd read it made them soft and easy to cut, well I did good until the next to the last one and cut it to short..she cried out and it was bleeding

It didn't bleed long and she's fine now but next time, she's going to the groomers!!!! Broke my heart

I'm guessing she has all black nails? They are hard to judge! Only one of our dogs has white nails, but I still clip all 3 dogs myself. Once you've done it for a while, you can judge easily how far is too far.

My dogs have black nails too. I have a cordless dremel minimite from wal-mart. I use the sanding attachment and file nails with it. Just a little every few days keep them short and smooth without clippers.

yea, they're black. I was trying to be so careful and not clipping that much, she was wiggling around,I was trying to hurry and I cut to much

I felt soooo bad I keep checking it, but she seems fine, hasn't slowed her down a bit lol

If you can use the Dremel, start her on it NOW. Gypsy HATES having her paws touched; she turns into a devil dog!

Awww Tammy, don't give up, that is one expense you can do without. It really is easy to do and Lori is right, start her now while she is young, in a couple of month's she will just let you do it whenever. If you don't have the dremel tool, just clip the ends every few days or once a week and constantly touch and hold her paws all the time to get her used to the feel. I do the same thing with my cats and Sid is the only one I have major fights with still, of course he HAS to be my biggest and strongest cat. I look like I've been in a cat fight when I'm done with him.

Oh I forgot, pick up a stiptic (sp) pencil in Wally's, it's with the mens shaving stuff for when they nick themselves. If you happen to clip them too short, just dap it on and it will stop bleeding immediately.

We don't have a dog, but do trim our cat's claws and it is a two person job. Took a lot of trial and error (and scratches) to figure it out. I sit in a comfortable chair and hold Hershey on my lap, wrapped in a bath towel with the paws covered except the one we're working on at the time. I pet, and talk calmly and softly to her while Bob cuts. She still doesn't line up to have her claws trimmed, but it is a lot less traumatic (for eveyone) than it used to be.
