Angry MIL's dog PEEEEEED on the carpet!!

Arggg!!!  She peed in my daughter's room.  They were visiting a few days ago & Ashleigh took the dog down to her room.  The dog peed in a corner of her room.  IT'S STILL WET!!!  It stinks to high heaven!!!!!!!!!

What can I do to get it clean???  I mean REALLY clean!  The smell completely GONE??!!

    Can you tell I'm angry?

So has anyone had success in getting a smell/stain out successfully?  Do I need to replace the carpet?

    ARRRRRRGG!!!

Use a fifty fifty mix of vinegar and water. It will neutralize the ammonia in the urine and take the smell away. It works best if this is done right away.

If you don't want to use this, you can get a product called Nature's Miracle at Petco or Petsmart.

Otherwise you are going to have to get a professional to come in and clean it. (DH is a flooring installer, we get asked all the time) The problem with pet urine is that it doesn't just soak into the carpet, but the spongey (literally, often made of recycled foam) carpet pad has soaked it up too. Not only that, if your sub floor is wood, the wood soaks it up too. This is a huge problem. Don't let liquids set too long on carpets. Why? because the carpet fibers are looped around what is essentially a mesh. they are secured with a glue. This glue is softened by water, solvents, and heat. So please blot up all attempts to clean the mess as soon as possible. Or get a professional to come and clean it.

Yeah, I just saw it tonight, though! UG! It's still damp & stinky. After I put DD2 to bed I'll try to clean it up.

The pad underneath is the waterproof stuff (it's got like a rubber coating) that we bought specifically for this room because it's the basement & well, I have kids. So maybe we can save that. And, it's concrete under that.

    Double UG, anyway!

I'm going to try the vinegar. If that doesn't work, I'll probably just get a new carpet remnant. It's had plenty of things spilled on it, I suppose ................(sigh)..............but not pee!

Her mattress is on the floor (she thinks it's cool) and I think it's on the mattress, too. It smells so bad! Good grief! Kennedy had accidents while we were pottytraining, but nothing like this! Maybe it's just because it sat for so long without us knowing. Or could it be that dog pee smells worse? I don't have dogs.

Ashleigh is going to have to sleep on the couch tonight.

I know this works with cat pee, not sure about dog...

If you shine a blacklight on the carpet, you can see all the urine glow bright yellow/green. You really need to use a special carpet cleaner from the pet store, they've always worked better for me. Once the spot dries, keep using the black light and repeating until the spot disappears.

Well, nevermind. DH came home last night & he was, um......mad.

    He tore it up.

We'll just have to get new this weekend.

Ashleigh has requested HARD WOOD! HA! Fat chance!

There is a product called "Kids & Pets" (I think that's what it's called, or something very similar) that is sold at Wal-Mart. I have used it on every stinky mess imaginable--think 3 cats, one dog and 5 kids!!!--and I just swear by it. It takes the stink right out. It costs about $5 for a big bottle.
