Has anyone ever hadone as a pet? Ds brought one home yesterday and it is the funniest little thing I think I've ever seen! They are hilarious to watch.

Anybody got any pros/cons for the little critters?

Yeah, I have had one. Pros, they are cute, cuddly and so loveable. They are clowns. But yes they do have some bad habits. Mine did anyhow. cons...He would poop in every single right angle corner of the house. No matter what, potty training was a difficult process. Also he would unearth potted plants. I'd come out in the morning from a good nights sleep only to discover a fern massacre. They have a body odor that turns some people off (shampooing with ferret shampoo worked, but it needs to be done pretty often). Mine was also a thief. lock up, put up and hide keys, wallets, glasses...just some friendly advise! For whatever reason, mine went and attacked ds1 as an infant in his car seat, bit baby's finger enough to draw blood. erick would scream bloody murder each time he saw him after that, so we had to find him a new home.

I would (once the kid are older, no babes in the house) get another. They are comical. I really enjoyed him. :)

We had a female named Buger (DS was 2 and named her) for a few days over 8 yrs. She was a wonderful, smart little pet. I second the thief thing! Our liked to steal small baby bottles and haul them under the couch and chew the nipples off.
The only problem I had was the musky smell not having a local vet that did exotics.
A word of caution becareful where you step if it is lose! I had no idea our was in the bathroom. I stepped out of the tub onto the rug and heard an awful noise. I'd stepped on her. After a 30 mile dash to the vet, $500 and a few days at the vet she was ok. My accidentally stepping on her caused swelling near her brain and she had to have lots of steroids. Keep a close eye on cupboards etc.
We trained ours with fruit loops. Anytime we let her out we went to the cupboard and shook the box before giving her one. Eventually 1st thing she was let out she ran into the kitchen and put her paws expectantly on the cupboard. That training made it much easier when we couldn't find her. Just shake the box and she'd run on in.
As she got older her hind legs occasionally dragged as she first got up. The vet said it was arthritis. She was still happy scampering all over for those fruitloops!
I bawled like a baby when that silly little thing had a stroke and had to be put down. So did Dh. Now that means something as hes not a big critter fan!
Oh, she loved playing in old shirt sleeves, small tubes/boxes and any type of cat toy. We did have to teacher her not to bite! She liked to run up and nip a oy and run until youd chase her. We taped her nose then ignored her until she learned.
Enjoy your new pet!!!

Apparantly it is not legal in all states to have ferrets as pets. Paris Hilton (or one of the new young "celebrities") showed up with a ferret at a fashion show or some other big public event in California. The news story I saw said that it is illegal to have them as pets there. So, I would check the law in your state before bringing home a ferret.

Those little furball critters are tons of fun :D I never had one of my own but my DH friend whom we shared the apt. w/had a few of them. They always took stuff outta my purse while we were riding in the car. Those little thieves!

Samantha had fun running after them @ 1st she didn't know what to think, one of them decided to cuddle up next to her on the :couch: sitting on the arm part & she was right @ the edge her snouty was resting on the arm but she didn't mind. If this crazy hyper animal is going to kinda sit by her head.

Keona hasn't had this experience yet! Except for seeing them on tv as we watched Kindergarten Cop movie. Then she'd watch whatever was going on & bark @ the tv.

DH friend kept them in a huge dog cage lined w/the mesh wire so they couldn't escape while he was @ work!

It's very dangerous if they find a small hole to go exploring in since they can get stuck in walls & die :(

People used them to "ferret out a rat" they are great comical pets, you'll get you're share of laughs!

He always wore a t-shirt under a sweatshirt & they loved being stuffed between the 2 & inside pockets!

One of them loved running in the hamster ball all-over the kitchen.

Beware they can get stuck under a fridge, stove, under the kitchen cabinets if the kick panel is moved just a bit etc. Under the couch was a great hiding spot for everything from bottlecaps to missing keys.

We were lucky our vet knew about them because there are certain ones who will not treat them.

Hmm now that I think about this Keona loves to be under stuff too! under the blanket, she's always under my feet or between them as I try to walk, she sleeps cuddled up next to me under the blankie (my instant heater) & now she's a bit annoyed w/me since I'm in the kitchen on my notebook & she can't be naping in our bed since she's gotta always be w/me so she's under the table sitting on my feet resting her head cuddled up next to Samantha (they watch me very good) usually in the winter months after DH leaves for work around 5 AM the :paw:girlz:paw: & I go back to bed & Keona watches tv w/me. So now that I'm in the kitchen she's gotta take turns taking a nap by herself or w/Samantha. She'll come back in a few minutes & check on me, then when it's time for Ma's breakfast she'll be standing by the counter waiting for her egg yolk & if I don't start cooking by a certain time she will start talking to me it's a lot of different sounds she'll make & it looks like she's yawning....it's not a whine & wagging her tail very fast, wiggling her butt!

Anyway have fun w/your new lil critter :D DS will be busy :)

I LOVE the picture of your ferrets. I think they're so cute. I used to work at a golf club, the steward and his wife had a ferret with the same colouring, Polly.

Sometimes they would bring her down to the bar and we'd all fuss her, there was one woman that none of the staff liked at all and she was the only person that Polly would nip at. Wonder if they'd trained her? LOL

Living here in Lancashire there's a stereotype that we all wear flat caps and have whippets and ferrets as pets - and indeed put them down our trousers! (Just for the record, I have NEVER done that!)
