Default Heavens~ the cat is going to fumigate me!

We took in a kitten s few weeks ago. We fed him our adult cats urinary formula the fist few ays before he went to the vet(almost 2 weeks ago). The vet absolutely insisted I had to feed him Science Diet kitten formula. She said to mix it half and half a few days and then full Science Diet. Everysince he started eatting it he has absoluely terrible gas!!! I mean terrible. He sits on my lap and I have all I can do not to gag. Now he was fine on the urinary formula. Do you think I can dump the SD? Hes a bit over 4 months old.

I know this probably would get a vet in a snit, but i would dump the science diet. sure cats and dogs get gas, but from the impression i get from your post it sounds like it is causing gastric upset. the constant gas can't be comfy for his little body. i would switch to another and see how he does. Perhaps another kitten food.

I would switch off the SD to another brand of kitten food. If it's SD, it probably has corn in it and that might be causing the gas.

My cat Boo was on SD kitten food when I adopted him and he had the stinky by-products. Switched him to Netro kitten food and it was cleared up.

Perchance does the vet sell the Science Diet? I think you already know the answer to this one.

We feed our dogs a natural diet that DH and I make - meat, vegetables and grains. They love it and and our vet said he hasn't seen healthier dogs in years. We tried this same thing on our cat but she refused to eat it. Now we give her cat biscuits - ½ handful morning and night and she gets 1/3 tin of fish cat food in the afternoon when I feed the dogs. All our dogs and cat are 8 - 9 years old and the only problem they've ever had is with ticks.

My vote is dump the Science Diet too. Your kitty will do just fine on the one you originally had him on.

Just a suggestion but I might consider shopping for another vet as well. My 2 dogs have allergies but the vet still recommends several different brands of food. Same with my cat and even the goats. I dont care for the idea that there is only 1 food suitable for the animals. After all, you have a budget to consider as well as the health and well being of the animal. Hope you enjoy your new kitten!

As someone who has done extensive research on pet foods, I can tell you this: Science Diet is CR*P. So are most of the big name brands. The ONLY supermarket brand I will buy is Nutranuggets.

BARF (Bones And Raw Food) diets are best. Obviously, you have to customise this a bit since cats won't be eating big bones!

Many dogs and cats have food allergies. In dogs, corn is one of the most common. If any of your animals has bad skin, try removing corn from their diet. A LOT of the time you will see major improvement in a short time.

Most vets only have a few classes on animal nutrition and push whatever foods they sell in their offices.

Do you have a local pet store that sells quality foods? Chicken Soup (yes, like the books!) is a great food. So is Innova, Eagle Pack and Solid Gold. They cost more, but you feed less, so they actually are a better buy in the long run. You will also be cleaning the litter box LESS, since there is less filler in the food and stools will be smaller and firmer.

Also, don't feed your cats tuna for a long time. Cats become tuna junkies and won't eat other foods. Also, tuna lacks essential nutrients (I believe Taurine is one of them) and can lead to blindness!
