    Question calling all dog owners

mil and fil have two dogs. one is a shepard mix, the second is a beagle. Their yard is a wreck of dog feces. I was thinking of helping them out a little (since my ds goes over to play and would like to play in the yard...) by getting them this..

    http://www.doggiedooley.com/

has anyone heard of it? does anyone have one? If it's a good thing, i just might get one for my yard. Lord knows I have plenty of strays, both dogs and cats that could make use of it.

I've saw them before somewhere, but can't remember where. Never had one though, so I'm not much help. Don't you have to scoop up the waste and dump into the container? Just seems like a lot of trouble to me. Plus, I'd worry about the kids getting around it.

Would it be more trouble than regular yard scooping?

It doesn't seem like it would be any less trouble. Only more $$$.

One thing that will help is for your inlaws to feed a high quality food. The dogs eat less and therefore produce less waste. Don't bother with Iams or Science Diet. They USED to be good foods until they were bought by the big corporations.

These foods are more expensive, but since the dogs eats a lot less, it is actually a better buy in the long run. Also, dogs fed a quality food have fewer health issues, so it costs less to care for them in the long run.

I know this is a bit off topic, but maybe it will help.

    Missy,

We used to have something similar to this gadget, it was same premise just a diferent shape.

The bottom line ( no pun intended!) is that the poop has to be PICKED UP and put IN to this thing, which then breaks it down into a liquid which goes into the ground ( ours was half buried in the garden).

We had two dogs at the time, so double the er output!

These days we use Nappy bags(Diaper) bags, they come in boxes of 200 or 300 at the £1.00 store and I open up two and put one inside the other, ( for strength) then put my hand inside pick up the poop and then turn it inside out in a "no touch technique!) then tie the bag up and it goes in to a pile in the corner of the garden, each week I bag it up into a plastic carrier bag and it goes in the trash.

No better, but no worse than disposable nappies

The thing with dog poop, is that you need to pick it up EVERY day and its best to do it as soon as you know the dog has pooped.

I get very cross about dog owners who let their dogs foul the local park it gets ALL dog owners a bad press and spoils things for every one, not to mention it being unsanitary

So having had one of these gizmo's I can safely say that, you STILL have to pick up the poop, it just depends on what you want to do with what you have picked up!
    HTH?

I think Karen has a a very good point. You still have to scoop it. I was thinking on this. I think it is like a septic system for dog doo.

I have never seen or owned one of these. I find that as long as I pick up the yard daily, it is not too bad. I use plastic bags from the grocery store to do this and then toss them into the large trash bags for collection. But in the winter and during rainy times, when I tend to get lazy about the yard, what a mess! Thanks for the reminder as I have not been out to the yard to clean it for about a week! YUCK!!! This is going on my to do list for the weekend before it snows again!

    Thumbs down

We have two dogs and tried a competitor's version. Even though there is an enzyme additive that helps the poop septic system the smell of rotting poop is quite overwhelming. We ended up removing ours. I hope this helps.
