The two female dogs both came from breeders and were not free. The male dog is a rescue and we paid an adoption fee for him. The cat was left for us by the former owner of our house so he was free.

Free.
The dog showed up one day, had obviously been mistreated.
We fed him and he just stayed.
He lives outside and DH built a doghouse for him.
The cat was given to us by friends. Psycho-kitty only lived inside for about 2 months before we booted it out to live with the dog.
They seem very happy.

Baxter was at the SPCA. DD and I went to look at a Rottweiller, and Baxter was the only dog NOT barking at us, so we walked him, gave him treats, and took him home. He was a wonderful bargain of $55.00, but is worth one million!

Our cat was a gift to DD from a boyfriend. She turned out to be allergic so I kept the cat. She came from a pet store. One dog was a stray that someone abandoned in the field near my house. The other dog, my youngest DD brought home from a flea market. The person who had them intended to put them down if he could not give them away. So she took one. The 2 goats and the chickens we paid for. But even the dogs and cat, although we did not "pay" for them are sure not free! LOL

We got our dog from the Humane Society. We had to pay $50 for her but that included the spading. The DH found the cat at the dumpster. We had her fixed too and it cost $50 to have that procedure done.

My neice works for the local animal shelter and she found
a pure bread shih tzu for me. Only problem was "Daisy"
had demodex mange and yeast infection so badly all over
her body she hardly had any hair. She was stinky and terribly
neglected but such a sweet gentle little girl I felt sorry for
her and took her home to nurse her back to health. We've
worked thru all her health issues and now she has a nice
fluffy coat and with the exception of some ear problems
she is pretty healthy. I love her! We paid $55 at the shelter
for her but its been ongoing vet bills since. Not too frugal
but hopefully we are thru the worst!

I have never purchased an animal, and doubt I ever will. Toni, my gorgeous torbie girl, was found scavenging in a dumpster. Woody, the big orange tabby, was left behind when neighbors moved. While I didn't pay anything to acquire them, Toni needed an abscessed canine extracted, and Woody needed to be fixed. Now, they are completely indoor cats and have so much personality.
