Help me make a decision
Just a simple question and a simple answer will do.

We looked at a puppy today. He was a shitzu/maltese and was - okay don't choke, fall off your chair or have heart failure - $475.00. That included first shots, deworming, 20% off of neutuering.
Now would you pay that much for a puppy?52 week money challenge - $41.00

er, lemme think, NO!!!!!
I would go to a specialist breed rescue if I wanted a particular breed (like we did with our dog because we know the breed)) and they have them all over he world
.....................or if I wanted a(any) dog I would go and look at the shelter and see who I fell in love with
we did that with our previous dog, he was adorable.
BTW I have never paid more than(the equivalent of) C$200 for any of my dogs!

One of our dogs was a rescue dog from the breeder and she still cost a lot more than $475.

I paid way more than that for our 2 dogs. We have gotten dogs dummed at our home and have taken in rescue. We just wanted these dogs and they were the first dogs we had purchased. I love them and wouldn't part with them.

Yes--though I'm not sure how much it differs between dogs & cats, but my kitten cost that much after neutering, shots, etc, and he was a freebie from Dee.

Besides I love Shitzus. Really nice dogs.

Well, I'm just not into big money for pets. Even a specific breed. My Shitzu was 10.00 from our shelter because she was over 8 years old. We've had purebred labs (not *papered* ) and they were never even close to that much. Unless you are going to breed, then I suppose it is a different situation. But for a companion animal, I don't think a 500.00 dog (cat) is any better than any other. Just my opinion...but I sure know a lot of people with high end pets with a lot of problems. My little one had a few medical issues (she was neglected) and she is 13 now...but we've spent $$$ on her medical needs. My friend just spent 450.00 on a shitzu and had to have surgery on her nasal passages...another 600.00! There will always be people willing to pay that much for a pet of their choice. But....well...walk into any shelter and surely you will find a pet that chooses YOU!
JMO....but I'm a Human Society volunteer.

Well I wouldn't pay that much for a dog but if you really want a dog, try you local shelter, I am sure you will fall in love with one there and for alot less money.
We bought a dog there and with his neutering it only cost us $110.

no but I'm predjudiced.
Both Trouper and Dozer came to us as grown up fur people and had a lot of love to give with very little training, shots, messes or problems let alone the little surgery to prevent puppies.
It's put me off puppies for life, no matter how cute and wiggly and cuddly.
They were so loving and so easy to adopt, all the fun, none of the mess.

Okay, I know you want a simple answer, but it's me.
I LOVE dogs. I LOVED my Bennie very, very much. (He's now living with another family in Delaware and is VERY happy.) However, pets are so expensive and so much work.
