what's the difference between
AKC and CKC (Continental Kennel Club, for those who don't know)? Does anyone know?

Missy, the CKC (Continental rather than CANDIAN) is a relatively new registry whoe registrations don't mean diddly. If I could teach my cats to bark, they'd register them as dogs!
The CKC is a registry used by puppy millers to register any puppies they might have that the AKC won't touch. The AKC will not register dogs of questionable parentage (not sure if dad is the Lab next door or the Boxer down the street!) or from breeders who have been ejected form the AKC for dubious breeding practices (changing registration papers, etc.)
If your new baby is eligble to be registered with the AKC or UKC (the United Kennel Club, another reputable registry) PLEASE register her with them. If she came with an AKC litter registry paper, then she CAN be registered with them.
I am curious--where did you hear of the CKC?

Both parents have to be registered with them before you can have the "children" registered. Most breederss will give you the papers you need to register.

You CAN get a limited registration for Emma from the AKC. She will have to be spayed and can't compete in conformation. She CAN compete in agility and obedience classes, however!
Agility is a lot of fun and you can run a lot of energy out of a young dog in a hurry.
How old is Emma now? You should be able to take her to puppy kidergarten soon. This is a general socialization class to get her used to other dogs. There is very little actual obedience work done; just fun with other puppies! This is important for her so she'll be good with other dogs as an adult.

This is the perfect age! As long as she's had her shots, she's set to go play.

she plays some with the inlaws dogs, but (i don't mean to sound like a snob, please know that) they are so ill-mannered that I don't want her to anymore. Puppy kindergarden sounds perfect. She's seen the pastors dog too and wanted desperately to play but they were just running an errand and couldn't stick around long. Otherwise he'd be perfect for her to play with. I am going to look around and see what I can find in town.

You're being a good puppy mom! Just like you don't want your kinds hanging out with hooligans, you don't want Emma to pick up bad habits from dog hooligans!
