maleka...our cockatiel
passed away on my chest last night.
At about 10 pm she began seizing for no apparent reason. you must understand that birds as a rule "hide illness" very very well. It is a survival mechanisim you can't breed out of them. The weak and ill are more easily picked off in the wild, and so they hide being ill in lieu of being prey. So I knew when she began seizing that she must have been very very ill. I called the vet and waited for him to call back. But by the time he did it was too late. She went rather quickly. I didn't want the other cockatiel to see her die, and i couldn't put her off in a cage all on her own to do so by herself. So i put her on my chest , held her, kept her warm and safe, and rocked her. She died at just past 11 on my chest.
the kids are beside themselves. But even more so is our male, he is a wreck. he's missing his buddy horribly.

Missy sending hugs hon, so sorry to hear of your loss. I know from other wonderful posts of yours about Maleka how much fun she was to have around, and what a companion to all of you.

our male is losing his mind...i think quite literally. he's taken to plucking his chest. The vet said to bring him in tomorrow and he can be fitted with a vest. Won't he look cute in a vest, lol. Poor guy. Dh wants to get another female, have her in a seperate cage, to give him the interaction he's going to need. He was so used to having a friend to speak 'bird" with. I will speak to the vet about it tomorrow and see if he thinks that'll help. I am not so sure.
thanks everyone for the condolences. It means alot to me.~~ Missy ~~

Dh brought a new friend home for him this morning. He's watching her...much the same way we watch him, LOL. As long as he's watching her we noticed he isn't plucking his chest. instead he's preening himself. making himself pretty. He's talked to her a little, and tried to engage her attention. She on the other hand is in panic mode what with everything being new and foreign to her. But she will go to the side of her cage to watch Arc sing and talk to her once or twice. Hopefully they'll make good buddies for each other.
