Paul the Cat
Well, my oldest daughter has been begging and pleading for her own kitten and since I am working from home now I finally relented. We found a free kitten on Freecycle and the people dropped him at our house. Chloe chose the name . . . . . .PAUL!!!!! I have no idea where she came up with that name but I find it truly hysterical for some reason. Who names a kitten Paul? Strangely he is long and gangly and it seems to fit. He is as cute as can be, our Paul.
Our only issue is with Daisy, our 5 year old cat. She is truly miserable. She hisses and spits and terrifies poor Paul. Any suggestions for this sibling rivalry?

Awww, how cute, and I can really appreciate the name paul, I have a cat named Larry!
Time and patience and make sure that Daisy has a place that she can get away from Paul for quiet time if she wants.

When did you get Paul?
If you can keep him in a room separate from Daisy for a few days. When you do let him out, make sure it is supervised so Daisy doesn't hurt him. She is only doing what is natural and letting that little pip squeek know that she was there first and it is HER house.
By keeping him in a separate room, Daisy will be able to get used to his smell without a confrontation. Then as you let him out each day, little by little increase the time out of the room. Within a week, everyone should be hunky dory.

Haha! I love pet names! It just cracks me up to see what people name their pets.
Unfortunately it is too late to do the gradual intro -- Pual has been here for three days and had the run of the house. He very cautiously avoids Daisy, poor little guy. If he happens to be sitting on the floor when she walks in the room all his hair stands on end and he starts edging backwards toward whatever human is in the room. Daisy has definitely established that she is the head kahuna.
We had gotten a kitten a couple of years ago, a female and Daisy never warmed up to her, so I was pretty hesitant to try this again. However, Blossom, the other kitten was hyper and rambunctious and used to jump off the couch on top of Daisy to ambush her. Paul steers clear and he is pretty mellow for a kitten. I actually have some hopes that Daisy will adjust to him.
She is sure on edge though. Boy, my sweet affectionate cat has become Medusa!
I have to describe these two. Daisy is this huge fluffball with no ears. She used to be a stray and got frostbite and lost her ears basically all the way down to her head. Chloe (oldest daughter) had gone to the pound and asked for the ugliest cat they had that no one else would want. Poof, we got Daisy. Paul is very sleek and lon and gangly. His tail is so long it wraps entirely around his body and touches his backside when he is sitting and his ears are so enourmous that he has enough ears for both of them. Hilarious looking.
Thanks for the advice, I'll keep you posted.

Don't worry, they'll adjust. or at the very least find the balance that works for them. We have had bella for 3 or 4 months now and she and Boris (my king of the house) still aren't bossom buddies but they can at least be in the same room together. Buster, our little one, seems to keep them both in check! We did the gradual thing when we brought home buster. It took boris about 3 weeks to even not hiss the instant he saw buster. When I brought Bella home DH was furious. We decided to do the gradual route with her too. I went to work the 2nd day we had her and when I came home she was out. I asked DH what the deal was, and he said she was just too sweet and he let her out. So much for gradual. I think that is why it is taking so long for her and boris to get along.
as long as the little one is not in any danger from the older one, they'll be alright!
(bella is the tortie and buster is the tuxedo in my avatar. as you can see they do fine. boris on the other hand refuses to be near both of them long enough to be photographed!)

First, I would like to say that I think it is Wonderful that you adopted "the ugliest" kitty from your local shelter. As you well know, if not for you, she probably would not have walked out those doors.
Second, Congrats on the new baby! As everyone else said, it just takes time. They will realize that they must live in this house together, and they will adjust. For some it may take days, others weeks.... just be patient.
Good Luck & I would LOVE to see some pictures!!Don't Breed or Buy While Shelter Pets Die

I think Paul is a cute name for a cat. LOL My cat's name is Basil. He is pure white and sweet as can be, but strictly an outdoor cat. He's a good hunter too.

Paul went to the vet yesterday. Clean bill of health aside from a few earmites which the doc medicated him for. Yippee!

Thank you so much for mentioning the shelter. I have found some awsome animals there. Its amazing how many incredible animals become
"throw-a-ways".
Kudos to you

I like the name Paul, not one you hear everyday for a kitty. I have often thought about naming one Dewayne, Ethel, or Mary...Just something that is not a traditoinal animal name.
Animal names are always fun. All of our are named after beverages. We have had Diamond (Diamond Brand Tea) Sunkist, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, Gentleman Jack Daniels, Frangelico, Mochachoalatte, Hunter-Heinekin, Maxwell House, Jim Beam, Mini Jim Beam, Budweiser, Miller Lite, Shasta, Fanta.
Some we shortened what we call them ie..Gentleman Jack Daniels - Jack, Mochachoalatte - Mocha or Mo-Mo, Hunter-Heinekin is just Hunter, Frangelico - Frannie
I know a lot of alcohol related names - kind of odd since we have never drank!!DD (19)
DS (16)
