My three Kitties only get store bought food. If there is a better alternative that is healthier for them, I would like to know.

My mom was just telling me this morning about a book she was reading about feeding your pets a homemade diet. I was curious if anyone had tried anything like that. Think I'm going to search around online and see if I come up with any good information. I'll post some links here if I come up with anything.

I feed Nutranuggets to both my dog and cat. It is a premium brand without the price. Both of them get scraps (they got the heart, liver, neck and gizzard of the chicken I am cooking this morning) off and on.

The diet you mention might be BARF--Bones And Raw Food. Gypsy's breeder makes this for ALL of her dogs and they look great! I don't have the time or the extra money for this, but both my critters have done well on Nutranuggets. At shows, judges mention that she's in great condition and has a wonderful shiny coat!

Cat and birds all get store bought food. Birds get veggies for treats and cat often gets a sneak of tuna (when ever I can get it by dh...he has a tuna fish stash because I am allergic to fish, he's gotta get his fish somehow!)

We buy because I haven't taken the time to study out what a healthy homemade diet for a cat would be. I know it's not human food. The pet food manufacturers spend lots of money on research and if you read the label on many pet foods they are loaded with extra vitamins and other nutrients.

When Hershey first came to live with us we were really poor and I bought the cheapest food we could find. At five the vet said she was underweight and had to go on kitten food to gain weight. That taught me that what you feed a cat matters just as much as what you feed a human child. Right now she's on Purina One dry food a special formula for hairballs in the morning (she eats on it all day) and 1/4 can of meat before I go to bed.

Our dogs and cats get store brand food - not the most expensive, but a good medium range brand.

I would like to recommend if anyone is feeding Ol' Roy or another bottom range food to switch to Purina or Pedigree at least. You'll find that the pets make less "waste" and they'll be healthier. It's cheap food, but you get what you pay for.

Just bumping old threads. I said store brand, but really I meant Iams.
