    Default Unexpected vet visit

Last night I thought our minature dachshund was going to die. DS#1 sat up with her most of the night until 3 am. Then he came and made sure I stayed up with her so he could go to bed (he doesn't have to get up in the mornings.) She was stiff as a board, her teeth were clenched, her tounge was hanging out of her mouth, and she was barely breathing. I did everything I could think of to keep her breathing until this morning so we could take her to the vet. When we finally arrived at the vet, I was told she had calcium deficieny caused by her nursing her 4 puppies. She was having seizures. They kept her all day and put her on some meds. She is doing much better, but not back to her normal self yet. I was told to wean her puppies because she couldn't support them.

I felt so bad for her because I had no clue as to why that was happening. I also didn't know what to do to help her besides comfort her. I knew she could hear me because she would try to move, but couldn't. She could wag her tail though and she did. She couldn't stand up until the this afternoon. I am so glad that ordeal is over.....$186 later! But I think it was worth it because she is one of our children. She is my baby!!

Oh, how sad! I am glad she is doing better. Are her babies going to be okay without her milk? My mother's dog has siezures, she's a beagle, they are so scary to watch and they leave you feeling so helpless.

She can still nurse them just not as often as before. It is hard to keep them apart from one another because she keeps wanting to feed them.

Awwww... poor baby... glad she's doing better. I have a beagle who has epilepsy and has seizures a couple of times a year... very scary. I may have to have him put on meds. He's had 2 seizures in the past two weeks. I feel so helpless when it happens. I just hold him and try to comfort him.

Oh Michelle, that is awful, I have never heard of that happening before with nursing. So glad she is going to be okay.

How old are the pups? Here is a great site on how to help wean the puppies. http://petcaretips.net/wean-puppy-drjane.html HTH and everyone is well.

Aaaww, how sad. Glad she made it through the night and is doing better. I raised a kitten from birth to 5 weeks on homemade kitten formula. She did fine.

Awwww... I'm a pet parent too, and I know exactly what you mean. It's so distressing when someone you love is in pain and you can't help them. Glad she's feeling better!

Dee, thank you for the link. I am going to go check it out. They have been doing really well so far. I am crossing my fingers. Mom is doing much better today. She is up moving around.

The vet said if we plan to breed her again that she needs to take calcium pills (prescribed by the vet of ocurse) to prevent this from happening again. I am not sure I want to breed her again after this episode.

Halloweenfreak, I was told that I could have given her powdered milk to help with the calcium deficiency, but I am currently giving her the daily calcium tablet in her food.

Glad to hear she's doing better. I know just how you feel about her being your baby. Every animal around here is like a family member to me. I even have a mocking bird as a buddy -- lives in our Holly Tree.
