    Angry Mange???

Okay--as I've mentioned, we have a new puppy that was rescued from Georgia. When we brought her to the vet up here, he noticed some red, raw spots on her legs and belly and tested for mange. He didn't see mange mites under the microscope, but told me that it did seem like it was mange. He said that it was common in dogs from the south. He gave me two doses of Revolution. I gave her the first dose and was instructed to give her the second dose three weeks later (which is next week). Well, her spots are still there and still raw. She's not biting them as much as she was, but she's licking them sometimes. I was hoping after the first dose I would notice a huge difference, but so far no. She has to go to the vet next week because she's being spayed so I guess I'll ask him then, but until I can, does anyone here have any experience with this????

I believe that mange is equated to scabies in humans...and I do think it can be transmitted back & forth btw humans & dogs. I may be mistaken though...

Could your dogs problem be allergies? My daughters puppy had spots like that and they reapppeared every time that he had something that he ate that was other than his non-allergenic food... Ask your vet.....

Argh! I can relate -- it is hard to tell the difference between mange and an allergic reaction, since a skin scraping often won't catch the mites -- here's a helpful link:

    Hope that helps!

That is so weird. I live in Ga, and we have seen about four dogs running around in the past year with all the little dots and bites (looks like bites) I always thought they were allergic to something. I read somewhere(don't quote me) that some dogs that are lower to the ground get rashes. It is so funny you should mention that cause I have only seen it in GA. Also it is common to see where it is kinda makes the skin harden up. I hope your puppy gets better.

Thanks for the info ladies. Her spots aren't crusty or anything--just raw. They don't look like bites, either. Hmmmm....I'm starting to suspect an allergy. I can't wait until she goes to the vets! Thank you!

Our dog has just recovered from mange.

the fur fell out, the skin got dark & rough & the dog was very stinky:
these are all of the common symptoms of mange.

dog was miserable from scratching. we had been to her usual vet a few times
& she was mis diagnosed w/ allergy so she suffered longer, being treated w/allergy shots & topical meds that did nothing.

New vet did the skin scraping, check under the scope for the specific kind
of mite. After 2 shots & 2 days she had amazing relief. the treatment was 2 shots every 3 weeks. Cost $140 total.

sometimes these mange mites do cause scabies in humans. creepy. The vet said it is rare , & he had seen it once.

If your vet did the skin scaping & checked for the mites under the scope,
he/she sounds like they know what they are doing. Also the rough, black skin in mange is very distinct... it is like rhino skin.

Our dog is not allowed to run free any more. they get mange from contact w/ animals or remnants of animals w/ it. Our dog likes to run in hedge rows & rolls in everything which is probably how she got it.

Good luck in making your pup feel better!

My dog had allergies and would get raw spots. Taking him to an all lamb and rice food helped alot. Also a very strict no table food and no treats rule that everyone had to follow. I would be very careful what you allow the dog to eat and see if that helps any. Cut out all beef products first, including bones, chews, treats, etc. Let him have raw carrots to munch or apple slices instead. Good luck!

A lot of dogs are allergic to wheat; even more are allergic to corn. Most low end foods are loaded with corn. Try lamb and rice as mentioned above. If this doesn't work, try things like venison and potato.

Wow! You people are smart! Red maples--I'm thinking that this isn't mange, then. Her skin isn't black and rhino like. Just pink and raw looking.

Yes, I have heard that humans can get it, but when it's dog to human, the human just itches for a few days. It's not the same as when scabies goes from human to human. None of us have been itching and we've had her for 2 weeks now.

    Thanks again!

I agree with this fully, corn is the most common allergin to dogs, and the most common ingredient in a lot of dog foods! It causes the itching, chewing, raw spots on a LOT of dogs. I've very lucky none of my dogs are allergic to it, but my best friends dog breaks out like crazy with any corn at all, and her dad loves to feed her cheap dog bones, sigh, poor scruffy.

I'd get some antibiotic ointment (not cream) and rub it on her sores. Keep them from getting infected.

There are 2 types of Mange - Demodetic Mange that usually will rectify itself in 3 months or so (this doesn't sound like your case, as it is caused by mites and appears around eyes and ears only)
Then there is scarpotic mange - contagious to both humans and dogs so all bedding and whatnot should be cleaned reguarly.
Ivermectin in 2 doses, 2 weeks apart should kill the mites. Also, steroids in low doses will help relieve the itching. If the sores begin to ooze, consider an antibiotic as it means the mites may actually be causing a secondary infection.
Also, medicated baths can help soothe the skin (I think it's chlorohexiderm) Hope this helps.
    It is what it is.
