Black cats and why they are not adopted...
as much. I had a woman that runs a shelter where I got a couple of my cats tell me that black cats dont get adopted as much because of superstition. People are afraid of black cats bringing bad luck etc. Also alot of sheters dont allow black cats to be adopted during Halloween time for fear of what some might do to the cat. I had a black cat as a kid and he was great.

We adopted a cat in August and were told the same thing. We came in to adopt a cat I had seen online, but then found another cat that we just adored and took her home, instead. She is a black cat and we just love her. She had been at the rescue center for 8 months! The average length of time for the cats was about 2 months, so I guess no one else wanted her.
But I have to say she is the best cat I have ever had and we love her to pieces.

People are silly, We adopted 2 black cats from the shelter, they have been lots of good luck for us. Unfortunately one is no longer with us. It is horrible , that people would do something to cats on Halloween.

Before I knew I was terribly allergic to cats, I adopted a black one. I loved that little guy SO much. He was the sweetest cat ever - always wanted to be next to me or on my lap. He slept on my pillow at night.
I put up with the breathing problems for a long time, but eventually DBF said we had to find a new home for him b/c he was tired of seeing me suffer. I tried talking OTC pills, but they didn't do much.
I miss my kitty.
It's sad to know that people stay away from black cats b/c of silly superstitions.

Growing up I had a black cat called Tiffany, she was the best. She got hit by a car on a country road and broke her leg, we looked for her for days. Three days after she went missing she came limping home, we spent $1600 getting her fixed and had to have her leg amputated. in the end though the damage was so bad the vet recommended putting her to sleep. I cried my eyes out, we buried her in the garden on our property and planted a tree next to her. My parents no longer own the place and I live 1500km away from it but everytime I visit my in-laws who are close by I drive past and see Tiff's tree. I can't believe people would descriminate against cats because of their colour, but then again I can't believe people do it to people as well.

Horrible! I have a tuxedo cat, mostly black, and adore him. Several of my friends have black cats and they are lovely.

Amazing that people are still superstitious in this day and age.
But then again, people don't adopt black dogs, either. I think people think they are plain. This might come into play with the cats, too. I've seen many pleas not to pass by a black dog on adoption sites, and the explanations were not because of superstition.
I'm glad my mom rescued a black dog and my sister has adopted 2. Another sister rescued an almost-black dog as well.

Okay I must be a weirdo!
Seriously people won't adopt a black cat or dog because of their color? I've always preferred black colored animals. I think there something very attractive about just all black. It's the multi color animals that I sometimes find unappealing.
That said I just put down my black kitty this past June. Had her for 20 years and miss her terribly. Not only was she very loving. She was the smartest cat we ever had and also the most entertaining. She also had six toes on each of her front paws so I wonder what people would say about that?

Interesting; I always heard that black cats and dogs don't get adopted because people don't like black fur on everything. They prefer a color that blends in better like a tan or a grey.

We are pretty friendly with our local shelter staff and were told it is because of superstitions and bad things at Halloween also. I have 2 black kitties right now and I had to put 1 to sleep last year, the one we had to put to sleep was the sweetest, craziest cat I have ever met. He was 8 years old and still acted like a kitten. He used to play fetch and he likes to chew rawhide bones, I always joked that he was too close to a dog at the shelter and he thought he was one, lol. He was also an incredible mouser while my other two at the time could not be bothered with such things (we have always had a lot of mice in our house, not sure why). My 2 kitties now are a little less than a year old and they are siblings, the male ws so jumpy when we got them that I thought he would never become a lap cat (as did the girl at the shelter, she did not think we were going to take both so she kept trying to get us to take his sister because she was more friendly) but now I cannot get him off my lap or my side if I am sleeping in bed, he is such a lovey. The girl at the shelter was so thrilled that we were taking both black kittens that she did not even charge us an adoption fee for the 2nd cat. I am sorry about the rambling, I love my kitties.

I'm always amazed at how cats tend to have certain traits based on their colors. I've owned 2 black cats in my life, they both seemed to me to be a little smarter than the other cats
. They were very well behaved, you only had to show them once not to get on the table, etc. with a little scolding and a wag of your finger.... they were that sensitive to your feelings!
I've also heard that big, black dogs are the least likely to get adopted (besides pit bulls, I believe). Maybe people are a little afraid of them. Odd, since Labradors are big & black, and often the friendliest dogs out there.

I just got a new black kitten. His name is Alastair. When I got my other cat 2 years ago, I wanted a black one but saw her (tabby/bengal) and got her instead. But I've always adored black cats, don't understand the sperstitions because they are just regular cats.
