Default My Dog Just Had Major Surgery

We adopted an older Golden Retriever/Lab mix last year from the shelter. Lucas is 10. He started to develop a lump on his leg and in just 1 month it was the size of a grapefruit! Took him to the vet who told us it might be cancer and needed to be removed. OK. Then DH finds 2 more on his chest! Oh boy.

Well, Lucas had his surgery Tuesday. Poor guy has one of those cones on and his leg looks like Frankenstein!

DH was reading all of his old paperwork and it seems Lucas' previous owners had a very similar surgery done on him (benign) and then gave him to the pound! So, we think the poor guy is going to end up with these often.

Does anyone know if these are recurring problems.

BTW surgery was $700 (that's why the EF is so slim). We had no idea this was coming up.

I'm so sorry! My Rott/dobie mix was prone to fatty tumors but the vet never removed them because they didn't seem to bother her. Her knee looked bud but caused no pain.

We're still waiting on the biopsy results. If it comes to the fatty lump and not cancer, we will feel sooooo much better!

I'm sorry...I hope Lucas is feeling better. Starting in August my Rottie mix was in and out of the hospital with some serious stomach issues. It ran me about $1600 over a 2 month period of time, but he's fine now (and he's worth it!!). He has a fatty tumor on his chest, but they said not to worry about it.

I guess these tumors are pretty common. Good to know. If the biopsy on this one comes back ok, then I guess we don't have to panic each time we see one. Thanks for all the input and well wishes for Lucas.

I know there's a member here that has in the past talked about pet insurance and how much money that saved them....? You might search for that and find it.

I hope Lucas is ok with no cancer. Sorry it cost you so much.

Well, normally the cost would have been written off as a well ya do what ya gotta do to make sure the family is ok thing. But I have been out of work for 6 weeks so finances were kinda dismal. Well, he's worth it anyway!

Sending good thoughts to you and Lucas, may he recover quickly and the results show benign.

My golden went through this four times during her life ~ 3 cancerous and 1 benign. It really is a big expense but so worth it!
