Default I Feel Awful -I Think Asia's Pregnant

    A little background-
My male husky came down w/red mange about 6 wks ago- something that is inherited. So, I decided to have him fixed b/c I didn't want any chances of him passing it to any offspring. The appointment is set for Feb 13.
I also decided to have my female fixed at the same time - here is where my dilemma comes in....Asia went into heat a few weeks back & we had a slip up & now she's showing signs of pregnancy.
I feel so horrible - I tried to be careful, but Dakota got to her anyway
If I go ahead & keep the appointment for her- they're going to have to abort the puppies - & I feel horrible. What would you do? Would you allow your dog to go ahead & have the puppies & get her fixed afterward and tell the new owners of the puppies that they carry the gene that can cause a red mange flare-up? Or would you go ahead & keep the appointment & abort the puppies?
I know that they're just animals- but its also life.

At the risk of being hated I would say abort. You don't want the puppies and you will just have to work that much harder to find a home.

To me life is life no matter if it is animal or human. I could not abort the puppies.

I'd talk to the Vet and see what their thoughts are considering how far along she'd be.

As long as it's safe I'd go ahead and get her fixed now, I know you'd feel bad but the thought of producing probably 8-12 puppies with a condition that could plague them for life is not something I'd want to be responsible for.

And honestly, there are so many dogs out there already, I'd try not to add to the numbers.

good luck with what you decide.

I agree with this, but I it would be a difficult decision. Good Luck

i guess its up to you and the bill of having the pups then giving them away. making sure their healthy. But if not and theres no way money wise to have the pups and too much responsiblity right now, I do understand. very hard descion. Me myself, I dont belive in abortion. But whatever you do, will understand.

I would have to agree with the abort; I would hate to do it myself as well but I'm thinking what are the chances that they will have the gene; are the ppl that receive the pups going to be willing to do what is going to be needed to deal with it? or are they going to pass the dog off and on and on till it either winds up homeless or in a shelter anyway. I adore my dogs and they ALL know it, but if it was Harely or Diva I would do the same. And in the long run your female dog will have a happy healthier life due to not ever having a litter of pups.

I would get her spayed now. I am about as big an animal lover as there is, but they are not human babies, there's already such an over-abundance of pups out there, and depending on your state's laws, you may be liable for medical treatment of the puppies even if you give them away (instead of selling them).

I would double check w the vet-it is also possible she is showing signs of a false pregnancy. Also consider if you let her have the pups that you can donate them to be helper dogs....like search and rescue, assist dogs. It's another option. If they are full blown husky or if the mix is a decent size(it just dep on what they would be trained for) they will have no issues. The babies may not show the signs of the defect and they usually fix the animals so they won't pass on the gene.
