Default Diapering Diva...?'s about first heat

I'm so mad at myself, Diva the newest addition to our family is a 11 month old silky-poo (a tiny little michief maker). Trying to get her fixed has been awful, either I have the money and no time or I have the time and no money. She has went into heat as of yesterday am. I feel horrible poor little thing. I sent one of the kids over to a neighbor b/c her daughter had a baby not to long ago to see if we could purchase a couple of diapers from her that maybe he had outgrown. She sent over a handful of newborn diapers and we diapered Diva. She doesn't quite know how to react, she acts like she feels she's in trouble but doesn't really know what she's done. She's such a little trooper she's wearing the diaper and not trying to do anything to it to rip it off or other wise. I should of done it months ago but between the ex taking me back to court and the holidays *sigh. I'm still going to get her fixed; will it be worse for her b/c I waited and now she's had her first heat? & how many days on average will this last? Grrr I have always got our animals fixed before this happens *kicks self

The surgery won't be any worse after having a heat and a couple of days later she'll be back to her own self. You'll just have to get through this couple of weeks. I can't remember how long our dog was in heat, but I think it was less than two weeks.

Poor little thing, maybe she deserves some extra treats?

Our vets here recommend it after their first heat. So you should be fine. I know other people wait, if they adopt an animal, they can be a couple years old and get them spayed then. So you should be fine.

you know alot of the county shelters will sell you a coupon for a discount to have your pet nutered, if you can prove that you dont make enough..well i think that is the way, or maybe they do it for everyone... good luck.. just thought you might want to check that out.

Make double darned sure she is NEVER, EVER outside unattended. Dogs can be tied in a matter of seconds. Also, since she is so small, you don't want the neighbor's Lab or Boxer tying with her--it could damage her and she could never have puppies that large.

You may want to go to the thrift store and buy some tiny boy's underwear. Turn them around backwards and put her tail through the hole. Use part of a pantiliner in it for a pad and they will stay clean longer.

Diva will probably be clingy and do a lot of dramatic sighing ("oh, woe is me!") for the next couple of weeks. She will be receptive to males when she "flags" (back up to them/you and turns her tail to one side).

Also, is is NOT necessary for the bitch to have a litter to be a good dog. This is an old wive's tale from waaay back!

Good luck and keep a very close eye on your girl. Thank you for being a responsible owner!
