We have a Samsung that works pretty well. I got it so that we would have a decent camera to document issues with a rental we were in that management was refusing to address. The other reason we got it was the resolution is over 12 megapixals. Cameras with over 5 mp resolution can be used to "scan" pictures and books. Great for genealogy or preserving things.

Have you looked at ebay for replacement batteries?
My diaper bag/purse camera is a FujiFilm FinePix F10 (discontinued model) that I've had for almost 5 years. The camera is still on it's original battery (rechargeable) and has taken more than 15,000 pictures.
Debt free other than the mortgage.
