High Risk Pregnancy
Hi everyone. I haven't been around FV for a while but I am back now.
I am pregnant (6th pregnancy) with baby #4 (hopefully). My oldest (of 3) is the only one that lives with me full time - the younger 2 live with their dad 2000 miles away.
This is my DH's first baby (aside from the miscarriage last Oct).
I am very high risk - due to having diabetes and hypertension. Also am 35 (considered Advanced Maternal Age) and this being pregnancy #6, well, that's another High Risk Marker for ya.
Anyway. I am due 10/14/09. But am sure the baby will be here in Sept (or earlier).
I was wondering if you all are planning on (or have used) cloth diapers. I never did with any of the other kids but that has been forever. Youngest just turned 8 and oldest turned 13 so this is starting over AGAIN.
Thanks.

Donna I am so glad to see you posting. I know you are pregnant again and have been worried about you. I am happy that everything is going well and my prayers will be with you and the baby. Now about the diapers,I used both many years ago. Matter of fact pampers just came out and we had to use diaper pins on them. I always liked the clothe diapers. I always hung them out on the line to dry. I don't think we had much diaper rash since we changed them more often than disposables. That is just my opinion. You do whatever works the best for you and baby. Take care and keep us up to date. Bless you and your family.

Thanks. Sorry to worry you. I've been so worried about this pregnancy that my mind has ONLY been on that - not really too much else. I've been spending alot of time on pregnancy and high risk pregnancy websites. Now that I passed the point where I lost the last one, I'm trying to NOT worry as much. I'm still VERY concerned. I am being transferred over to a high risk specialist for ALL of my care. the regular OBs are saying that I am "TOO HIGH RISK FOR THEM".
I'm gonna try to be around here more. I really need to get back on the "frugal wagon" not that I fell off - we haven't had any $ anyway. LOL
I'm thinking about using a combination of cloth and disposable. I pretty much ONLY used disposables with the other children.

I used cloth with my youngest 2 children. We used diaper service quality pre-folds (sometimes called Chinese pre-folds). All of them were purchased used on E-bay. Most of what I had were the 4X8X4 infant sized. When the youngest was a newborn, I did purchase a few newborn sized also, but only about a dozen, I think. The older needed toddler sized pre-folds later one. I think we bought a total of 2 dozen of those kind. My children were late potty-trainers. If yours train earlier, you may be able to avoid needing the toddler-sized ones.
There are a ton of fancy diaper covers out there. None of them were cost-effective for me unless I found them for a great deal on E-bay. We used nylon pull-on diaper pants. They still make the rubber/vinyl diaper pants also. Although those are less expensive, they did not hold up well with frequent use, so we went with the more expensive nylon ones.
For fasteners, we used old fashioned diaper pins. There were some newer types out there, but those were also more expensive. I knew pins worked well, so I just used those instead of trying anything else.
Congratulations on your pregnancy!

We are still trying to decide on what to use. We have come to an agreement that we will use the disposables for the first few months and then try cloth if the disposables are really costing us a lot of money. Our reasoning is that we can't do everything...My Dh and I will both be working 20-30 hours a week at our jobs and we aren't going to use daycare, so we will be taking care of our baby in shifts around working. We just won't have the time to wash diapers. We also live in an apartment building where we pay to wash our clothes, it just doesn't seem practical at the moment for us.
Make sure you weigh the cost of time and energy (your energy and the cost to wash the diapers so that they are properly maintained.) We are not allowed to hang clothes of any kind to dry outside and we have limited space and will have even less space to dry clothes inside our apartment once the baby arrives. Instead of focusing on cloth diapers we are going to continue to make our own meals and shop sales with coupons and stock up when we can at the market. We are also going to continue to make do with what we have and really think about our purchases before making them. We are sure we will try our hand at making baby food to balance that cost once the baby is old enough for solids, and I'll be breast feeding to keep the cost of formula down or non-existent. We have just realized that we can't do it all.
