Breast Pumps
Our first grandchild is due in September and my stepdaughter really wants a breast pump (not a manual one.) We would like to surprise her with one because she cannot afford to buy it. Can anyone recommend a certain brand? Any help would be appreciated because I'm not familiar with them.

i used a few diffferent brands Madela..Medela...something like that, was the very best. Evenflo was the worst for me. The medela (forget the spelling off the top of my head, it;s been awhile) was reliable, came with a storage bag, milk bag, several settings, extra bottles, and a warranty. the resale value is good too...if you wanted to go that route after she;s used it.

I think I used a Medela as well.
I used a breast pump for a few months since DS6 spent time in the NICU when he was little and the supplemental milk was great in case I got sick.
I got mine secondhand and it came with a carrying case, extra suction cups, 2oz bottles, etc.Wife to DH since 10/31/2002!

We also used a Medela. With Wesley, we rented one from the hospital for $10 a month. A friend gave us hers for Maggie, we just bought all the tubing, etc. to replace it.

I too had a Medela.
Mine was a pump in style. Used when I nursed both of my children.

I have the Medela Swing pump. It's different from most of the other Medelas in that it's a single side pump, the others from that brand can do both sides at once. It takes me 15-20 minutes to pump both sides from unpacking my stuff, to packing it all back up. If your daughter doesn't have to worry to much about being super speedy while pumping at work etc, its a great way to go in my opinion because it's very lightweight, small and portable compared to the other Medela pumps. It was $150 as opposed to the $250 and up for the double ones. It can be plugged in or can run on batteries if needed although I have heard that it eats up batteries quickly.
There are cheaper brands out there, but I think you get what you pay for in this case, there are tons of accessories available, you can feed directly from, or store the milk in the same bottles you pump into, you can even pump right into the milk freezer bags.

Medela here too!
I would think it depends on if she works or plans to go back to work as to whether you get the single sided or double pump. I know when I was pumping at work, it would have taken FOREVER if I had could only pump one side at a time.Judy

Thank you for the advice ladies. We went ahead and bought her a nice Medela double pump with the case and everything. We even purchased the extended 2 year warranty. I hope she'll like it.

Glad you went with Medela. It may be expensive to buy, but it's one of those things that is so worth it. I exclusive pump for my boys' breastmilk and my pump in style is a workhorse- I use it 8-10 times a day. After two months, it's paid for itself in formula not bought!
