Question Are your children named after family members?

Nope, we decided all 6 of our children would have their own individual names.

    Well, sort of:

Our oldest was supposed to Jacob Amos (after my dad's long dead cousin, and my long dead great-grandfather) but my FIL commented that he thought boys should be named after their father. . . . So he became Jacob Martin ( Martin is dh's first name)

When we had the 2nd boy- we used dh's middle name as the first name, and my grandfather had just died--- so we named him Douglas Henry.

Then we had my dd--- we intended to name her after my long dead grandmother, but my grandmother's name was Velmadean ( no way would I name a child THAT) However, most of the world called my grandmother Deanie. . . so we named my daughter Deana, and call her Deanie. . her middle name is Mae (my mom and dh's mom's middle names)

They all like the fact that they are named after people we knew and thought highly of.

my sons are named for countries. I had Shane when I'd been living in Europe for a couple of years. Shane reminded me of days at the beach and our surf champion shane stedman. Twelve months later, when Kerry was born, we were back in australia and I was researching my Irish ancestry. He was named for Ireland and a county where some of our family same from.

Grace's first name was dh's grandmother's name. He doesn't remember her though, we listed family names and liked that one. My son's middle name is Heuston and that is my Grandpa's middle name.

Each of my children have a family member's name for their middle names. Their first names have no familial associations. Oldest dd's middle name (Lenora) was my grandmother's middle name. Youngest dd's middle name (Vivian) was her great grandmother's first name. Oldest ds's middle name (David) is his grandfather's first name. Youngest ds's middle name (Wayne) is one grandfather's middle name & one grandfather's first name (the same name).

No offense to anyone here, but I don't believe in naming children after another person. My reason is, I feel that it limits the individuality of the child. I also feel that it makes people expect a lot of a person -- children named Elvis are expected to be talented and carismatic, etc. That is not necessarily everyone's opinion, just mine.

We set out not to name our children after family members to avert any hurt feelings or disagreements. As it turns out our youngest is actually named the same name as my great-great-great grandmother, Sabra. How strange is that?
