rapid heartbeat
For the last week or so, I've been having a lot of problem with rapid heartbeat. I can be sitting watching tv, on the computer, or driving. Nothing that would normally elevate the heart rate. It feels like my heart is beating a mile a minute - makes me feel like I can't breathe right and doesn't want to go away. I have it again this morning. The only thing I've eaten is a bowl of mini wheats.. so I know it's not from too much caffeine or sugar. I plan on telling midwife on Friday at appointment, but should I call and let them know before? Has anyone else experienced this?

Sounds like it might be the surge of sugar. Sometimes when I have too much I get a sensativity to sugar. Write down your foods, made you will see a pattern. Good luck, keep us posted.

It could be caused by your thyroid. Simple blood test will tell. I don't know how old you are, but perimenopause can start in the early 30's, and that's one symptom.

I found this that explains something about it.

I have this happen quite often as well. Even though I haven't been officially diagnosed I think I have mitral valve prolapse since my mom had it and my dd has it with the same symptoms. One thing that really helps me is to take a 1/4 tsp. of epsom salts at bedtime. It contains magnesium and a deficiancy can intensify the palpitations and premature beats. If ever I miss it it gets a lot worse. I'd see my dr. if I were you before you start anything like this being pregnant. You should have your thyroid checked as well.

Thanks for all the advice. I haven't had any probs yet today with it (knock on wood), but yesterday I had to go to sleep to get rid of it. It doesn't just go away really, usually takes me taking a nap or going to bed for the night. With being pregnant, I'm already drained and when this happens it just drains me even more. I go back to midwife Friday for an appointment and will mention it then. I will be getting my results back from the glucose test and anemia test then, so we will know if it's associated in anyway to those or rule them out. I never had anything like this in my other pregnancies, so it is all new to me. I really didn't have any problems during the last 2. What makes it even harder to deal with is I have a one year old and I can't just lay down whenever I feel I need to. SHe's a little hurricane! lol.
So we'll see what midwife has to offer on Friday.

I've never had anything like that, but I hope it turns out to be nothing serious and your midwife can shed some light on things for you.

I had the same symptoms with my last pregnancy. I had to go on Toprol prescribed by the cardiologist. I felt like I was totally out of control when the rapid episodes were taking place. I had over 10,000 irregularities within 24 hours which was diagnosed by wearing a Holter monitor. Cardiologist said that it was extremely high and put me on the med. I went off the meds a couple of weeks before my scheduled delivery because I wanted to breastfeed. I have not had any problems since and it has been over 3 years. From what my midwife said, it has something to do with the increased amount of blood and hormones in your body.
I would definitely talk to your OB-GYN or midwife at your next visit or sooner if the problems continue. I don't think I could have endured 6 months of this without the meds. I was diagnosed at 3 months. Good luck and feel free to PM me if I can be of further assistance.
