I thought about doing this when I lived by the nuclear power plant, but I never got around to it. I wouldn't have walked anywhere in a meltdown anyway, we were told to stay inside and tape up around windows and doors. There was also a tornado risk, again not something I'd walk out into.
The major risk here is a hurricane or winter storm. The house we are buying is wired for a generator so we will install one this fall. Once we move in I will restock the food and water. But there is no point packing for an evacuation because there is nowhere to go that's any safer than staying home.
I like the idea of a get home bag though. Getting stuck somewhere in the car is a far more likely scenario for us. I'm going to make sure I do that before winter.

Oh my gawd riaketty! You said the "S" word!!!!! LMBO
"jonesing" after the sealed rooms tho. We're starting the digging for a "rootcellar"( *wink* *wink*) in about 3 weeks or so.
monkey: sealing up won't help that much. you need at LEAST 6 inches of dense material around you to stop the rays. more inches would stop more rays. and you'd have to stay in at least 2 weeks if not longer. more like 2 months to be safer.

I have just learned the term BOB. I am grateful for this post so that I have an idea what to do.
I have many questions so please be patient.
Do you have ALL this stuff in duffle bags?
I don't have a place to Bug out to. In fact, I am now the oldest living person in my family at the age of 42. All elders in my family are gone. So I am the Bug out place for my children.
I believe if the BOB was just for me and my family just to evacuate, then having supplies plus money will help so that I can go off far from the danger and stay at a hotel in another state. Maybe I have the idea of a BOB wrong. I am thinking of other plans for more long term issues.
Thanks!Step 1 $207/1500
Step 2 Student loan $160.00 monthly
Schewels paid
Step 3 $252/$15000
Step 4
Step 5 1 child in college graduates 12/12
2 child $50.00
Step 6 $70,761/$93,000
Step 7 Build wealth & give.

If your children would bug out to your place in case of emergency, could you not also bug out to their place in case your residence was threatened?
And yes, a BOB is just for a short term evacuation plan. Mine has food/water/medicine/clothes/tents/money - enough for each person to survive alone for 7-10 days (recommendation is for 3 days, but I don't trust that FEMA or the government can get it together in 3 days even)
We live in a tornado/snow and ice storm prone area, so those are the things we plan for, mostly. Earthquake along the New Madrid fault is a possibility also, so we sort of plan for that. . . figure out what your mostly likely disaster would be, and plan for that. . . my middle son lives in the path of hurricanes, so their bug out plans are for that sort of disaster.

So if your home would be destroyed in a fire/flood/tornado. . . where would you and your family go? Having a plan is always a good thing. . . do you have friends that live a good distance away?
I think they recommend 70-100 miles away.
