Our generator isn't one that can power the whole house at one time, but being wired into the main panel, it can power any combination of individual loads up to its capacity. It is not a fancy expensive one, just a decent size portable.
I did the wiring myself. If you wire into the main panel, you absolutely MUST have a foolproof interlock to prevent back-feeding the power line. A transfer switch costs as much as a generator, but I devised a mechanical interlock that is foolproof and cost all of $10. It ain't pretty, but it is safe.
We do plan to get a Coleman stove for cooking during power outages. There is no natural gas here, so it would have to use liquid fuel. We don't barbecue, so getting propane would be a waste.

Glad to hear the power is back on..............and thanks for all the info.
Now I know where to go if I have questions about a generator-----if/when I decide to get one.
