I know it's been said before, but it bears repeating. If you're someone who can't live without chocolate, now's the time to stock up on cocoa powder and chocolate bars, chocolate chips, etc. Play video

I agree Pollypurebred I too have been trying to stock up on cocoa, honey, rice and beans. I am doing better with the flour than the other stuffs

It seems everytime there is a disaster somewhere this stuff dries up quick, and with everyone else in the world having problems - as you have mentioned, China, Korea, etc. Things are getting scarce.

And if I remember correctly we (as a nation) no longer have a long term supply stored. We have done away with that and use the "Just In Time" deliveries / stocking and even pay farmer to NOT farm tillable land!

So no "warm fuzzies" in my corner of the universe, and as I like to eat, preferably daily (my parents ruined me that way, and I ruined my kids that - viscous circle) I will stock up, hoard, prep, eek, miser, whatever you want to call it. I know I want to sleep at night... with a full belly.

I've been in the prepper game for a long, long time. I spent a great deal of the Reagan administration in a bunker underneath the State Capitol of Oklahoma teaching Sheriff's Deputies how to plot radioactive fallout patterns.

Am I just as worried now as I was in 1983...Yes. But for only slightly different reasons.

I hope I caught you in time...Do not invest in a Mantis!!!! Within 2 to 3 years you have to rebuild the carberator and it will run you upwards of $60 a pop. That was prices from 5 years ago.

I had one. Thought it was wonderful for the first year. Second year it was sporadic. Third year it didn't have any power. I couldn't even give that thing away when anybody found out how much it was going to cost to fix.

Get yourself a weed eater that has a tiller attachment. At least then you've got a better chance of having something that will continue to work.

Besides, if you are doing raised beds and you don't walk on the soil you shouldn't need a tiller.

Thanks! I didn't get the Mantis..I read the reviews on Amazon and they weren't very good to say the least..I saw a different brand that was less than $200 that has really good reviews so I will go with that one..

I want to have tools (drill, saws, etc.) that don't have to use electricity, also a way to wash clothes & stuff without electricity.

Yes, I have & yes, they are. I have had to wash clothes by hand before, don't think I'd really want to do that now-20's vs 50's. The upside now is that there are only two of us not 4.

Yeah, that's a plus. I've washed clothes in the bathtub before and after the first couple of loads, you don't want to see another load of laundry for a long time.

I don't like all that bending over.

I suppose an alternative is to just use a washtub and skip the wringer. It might take a lot longer to dry that way but at least they will be wrinkle free.

Or just get the wringer and buy something to attach it to. Some of the feed stores sell galvanized products a lot cheaper.

I can only do what I can. DH and I live 44 miles from where we work so I have to worry about gas prices. The thing is though we spend less on our house payment compared to a lot of coworkers. We do spend more in gas going back and forth, but with the house payment and taxes I think it all comes out about even. I am always worried about an EMP or financial collapse. So am really trying to consider all those things. I need to work on getting some good footwear for DH and I. Then I am going to figure out what else needs to be worked on.

That's what I've been leaning towards.

For laundry I have a new toilet plunger and a 5 gallon bucket with a lid and a hole drilled in it for the plunger's handle.

You can get a fancy model that does the same thing but why?

As for bigger items like blankets, and spreads, you can always stomp them with your feet. They usually don't get that dirty, so you can get away with just "airing" them out in the sunshine on good days.

I'm always buying baking chocolate and chocolate bars and cocoa. Along with sugar and all the spices that are imported from other countries.I've seen the prices of these things going up in the last year.

A clean mop wringer on a bucket will wring out your wash for you. Maybe not the really big stuff but most everything else.
