What do you store your food in?
What do you store your flour, sugar etc in? I have nothing to put it in. I was thinking of just going to Zellers and buying some storage containers. The plastic bin like ones, does anyone else use them to store food in?

Home Depot recently had some blue totes on sale for $3 each that I think would be perfect for storing flour and sugar. Think I'll go back and see if they happen to still be on sale (probably not though, darn it).

I don't know if you can still get them, but we use potato chip cans for flour and sugar. No rodent problems...

I use coffee cans for just about everything - flour, sugar, cornmeal, cereals, brown sugar etc. I tear off the lables and put my own on it. No problems with rodents/insects, and if by chance they somehow get in I am only losing approx 3 lbs instead of the full 50 lbs.
I like the arrangement and they stack easy and is easier to rotate for expiration dates. Hah and because I am periodically disabled - I can lift it!
BTW - we go thru a 3lb can of coffee a week...Last edited by cuteoldlady; 03-25-2011 at 01:37 PM. Reason: spelling as usual

I store everything in glass jars - seems to work for now. I know it's foodsafe and I like the small size for the reasons cuteoldlady said - especially if it goes bad, it's only a small amount.

I store things in coffee tins, plastic totes, or wrap them in plastic bags, date them, and put them in the larger kit tote until I can get a proper container for it to keep any critters out.

I buy pickles in gallon sized jars and use those to store flour, sugar and rice in. Also, Keebler Crackers (I buy them at Price Rite for a great price) are in a tin with a tin lid - I use those as well. We're even looking at some glass containers to purchase as we step up our stock piling. We've been flooded before. With the water come the rodents - I do NOT want to experience that again.
Of course, the next house caught fire - and now we do store canned goods in totes because even a minor fire can cause damage to cans. The soot that will seep through the floors and everything else is caustic. Much shorter shelf life after contact.

I use Gallon Glass jars, smaller canning jars and 5 gallon food safe buckets. Walmart carries them or some have luck getting them free from delis or fast food restaurants.

I don't understand the question. Are you asking what we store the stuff we're using NOW? Or how we store stuff for long term storage?
My salt and sugar are in tupperware canisters that I found at the goodwill. My flour is in a big glass container with a lid that I found at the goodwill.
For longer storage, it's all in mylar with O2's and in buckets.
For medium storage, it's in either in vacuum sealed glass containers or in vacuum sealed bags.

I just bought gallon size, tall cylinder type, plastic containers @ the Dollar Store. And I use 1/2 gal glass containers I bought @ a bulk food store. DG has them, but 50c higher. I also use 1gal zip loc bags for anything that will fit in them.

You'll want to make sure that whatever you store them in is food grade, if it's now you could be leaching chemicals into your food. For larger amounts of food I use bakery buckets that they give me for free.

For now - we use the smaller bags (2kg?) size of both white and whole wheat flour and sugar. We just roll the bag tight, bundle with an elastic and store inside a quality zipper freezer bag in the cupboard. We don't go through a lot of flour nor sugar but we do use it from time to time. Its not a stockpile item for us so long term storage isn't an issue.
I would like to switch over to these, though they're not exactly frugal/budget friendly. My friend has had these for some time now and totally recommends them.
10 Piece POP Container Set

BTW: there's usually a coupon for HBC Home Outfitters for 20% - 25% off one item/week - I may have to buy the containers one by one so I don't have to pay the full price. Maybe you can do the same? Or see if you can snag a few flyers and just pay for them in separate transactions?2012: The Year Of The Purge!
