I'm still working my way through Emergency Food Storage & Survival Handbook by Peggy Layton and love this tip she gives for carefully planning to have enough of what your family uses.
Keep track of what you eat and make for a one-week period of time. Don't just track the main ingredients, but every ingredient. (She states that most families repeat meals every few days so tracking isn't as hard as it sounds.)
To determine a 3-month storage supply, multiply the ingredients by 12.
To determine a 6-month storage supply, multiply the ingredients by 26.
To determine a 1-year storage supply, multiply the ingredients by 52.

I'm in the process of keeping track of what we're using for meals, but I am going to do it for 4 separate weeks and then figure what I need for a 6 month and 1 year supply. I think my list will be more accurate that way instead of tracking for 1 week only.

Make sure you keep you stores of food rotated or they may be no use to you in an emergency......

Yes, Lori. I label everything with when it was purchased and store new items that I buy at the back. Everything gets moved forward as it is used. I've been doing that for years now.
