Default What Supplies to have in, in case of power outage?

I was thinking that whilst I know some of you have alternative heat sources and stuff ( I am thinking wood stoves, oh, how I would love one )

There are a lot of people who don't have such a resource and so if the Electric goes out then they will be stuck for things to eat and drink...........

After lighting up the candles, I thought it might be a good idea if we brainstormed some food stuffs that everyone could have in, in the case of power outages.

These would have to be foods in a jar/can/packet that required NO cooking and could survive WITHOUT refridgeration, I will start and you can add your 10 cents

    Peanut Butter
    Jam( as in "Jelly" )
    Crackers
    Cookies

    Bottled water & soda

Tinned Baked Beans ( a staple in the UK )

& if you are not Veggie or Vegan and can eat in one sitting:

    Tuna
    Sardines

That's all I can drag out of the grey matter right now, I am sure you guys can think of more?........................

I have a lot of gallon jugs of water in the freezer, to help keep the food cold, and to drink. Also for the dog.

    Extra cash on hand.

Games to keep the kids occupied.

We are one of the lucky ones w/ a wood stove. We also have a gas stove & hot water heater, which stay on in the case of the electricity going out (we just have to manually light the pilot lights if they go out).

As far as supplies we have:
    battery operated lamps & batteries
    flashlights
    candles
    wood for the woodstove
    bottled water
alot of canned goods: veggies, tuna, tomatoes, fruits, etc.
    extra cash
    and most important
    EXTRA PRESCRIPTIONS already filled

what everyone else said, we do. I did alot better at having a good emergency "kit" together with food and meds. bandaids, tape, gauze, plastic, duct tape, little bits of a large variety of needs.
In case of power outage for us, we have a generator that will run about 12 hours on 5-6gallons, unless it is overloaded. This would be for our bedroom ac if needed, trhe kids would be in there and it is a good size plus bathroom, tv, laptop, and our fridge(26cf) and a few other smaller items. Just have to make showers quick, they will be cold Our neighborhood has it's own water supply. We could cook on our gas grill(would have an ect. tank, if known threat excists). Dh has heaters that take the gas tanks, same as grill. We have alot of blankets and it does not get "too" cold here.
Anything your family likes "wants", just don't go crazy starting out, say maybe $5.00 a week.

A crank, wind-up radio. L.L. Bean sells them and I've seen them at Bed, Bath and Beyond. They do not require batteries, but you have to crank them every so often to make them work. They run around $40 each.

MRE's (meals ready to eat, can get at military supply stores)--- packed full of calories, and very interesting to eat. Most of them are meant to last years.

Solar powered cookers or you can make your own out of coffee can and aluminum foil.

Granola bars or protein bars. Peanut butter on crackers, fruit snacks, bottled water.

Sometimes it helps to start small; like say make a kit that has enough to get by for 72 hours. Not an original idea on my part; one of our wedding gifts was such a kit that also had first aid and flares, etc. We've never had to use it, but it is nice to know we have.

Oh and bleach for cutting the germs or to "clean" out water if needed. Of course that might pertain to elec. outage, disaster, whatever

I forgot pretzels and totilla chips on my list last night.

MRE's are definitely interesting to eat. Definitely an acquired taste, but they do provide the option for a hot meal.

Since I can't edit, my above post should say tortilla chips (no totilla).

Anything that you "enjoy" or kids want to have as a "special" treat. Anything that you can add only "water" to.
