This made me LOL... both of my kids were so small that even the preemie size diapers had to be folded down to fit them. We were happy when they graduated up to "newborn" size diapers after about two months!
Even now, my nearly-two son is still in size 4 diapers. So, obviously, it's going to vary greatly with the size of your child.
Back to the OP... my son was allergic to many brands of diapers as a newborn, so I wouldn't advise getting too many packs ahead of time just in case you run into that.

I have not been a fan of CVS diapers in the past (quality issues, had to take several packs back). As far as the small ones go, I will pay extra for Pampers Swaddlers - they are SO SOFT. I know it sounds silly but they just are so smooth and soft, not crinkly like the cheaper brands. They only go up to size 2-3, though, but I love to buy them when I have coupons or can find a good deal (as I recently did at diapers.com).
As far as quantity, I count on needing size 1 for about 2 months, and about 8 diapers a day (minimum)...your mileage may vary.
I did buy some newborn size, but only 1-2 packs, since mine tend to not be in them long at all. I like the Huggies because they have a little dip cut out for the umbilical cord, which is very handy to not have to fold the diaper over like you would otherwise.

Oh, and don't open the diapers until they're needed, so you can swap them for bigger sizes if need be (I think WalMart and Target both allow this, other stores might as well, just save receipts/tape to packages).
As far as formula goes, my pediatrician says that the quality is not the same with generic. For what that's worth. He's a good doctor so I'm going with what he says, but I understand if some people disagree with that sentiment.
The hospital should hook you up with both formula and diapers...if they don't offer, politely ask. They ought to give you those little nursette bottles of formula that are worth their weight in gold (they're individual serving sized and have disposable nipples, so no washing at all for those 3 am feedings).

I just had #3 and I say due to the conveinence of not having to run out, I would suggest 2 packs of newborn, 3 packs of size 1 (I prefer pampers and they have points like coke rewards that you can earn free stuff but I also use huggies (depends what I have coupons for). I found in the long run I usually prefer Pampers for boys but huggies for girls. I know I am weird but the huggies used to give my oldest son red marks on his "package" like it was pinching him or something and the huggies just seem to fit my daughter better which means fewer leaks or blow-outs. Make sure you sign up at Pampers, Huggies, Similac, Enfamil, and Nestle and they will send you samples and coupons as well as formula checks. Similac sent me 2 cans of formula powder in the mail. As far as formula goes, I breastfeed and I supplement with formula. So I use whatever formula I get for free or cheap (with the coupons and checks) since I do not use it that much. Good luck with your little one.
