Default How do I unclog a drain in standing water?

DH has taken off for the day and left me with the bathtub full of water that will not go down

I've tried plunging it and it's not having any effect. Does anyone know how I might unclog it?

We only have one tub and I don't want to shower while standing in his nasty water. Figures I'd find this out AFTER my 5 mile run

I'm not really sure. Sounds like something must be clogging it. I would just keep plunging it. ??? Good luck!

I've been plunging away, but now the tub is full of nasty black gunk. DH is is BIG trouble when he gets home.

Sounds like it is backing up. Do you have a septic system? Does the toilet flush okay, and how is the sink?

Oooh, that sounds yucky. I always use baking soda and vinegar, but I've never had to do it through standing water. I'm sorry I can't help, but I hope you get it drained soon.

The black gunk is scum that lines the pipe wall and is being agitated loose by the plunging action. You need to run a snake through the drain

Ack! I think I'm outta luck until he gets home. I've been bailing the water out of the tub with a bucket, so hopefully I can at least shower.

    Thanks

~We had to buy a plastic snake(like $2 at Home Depot) for our kitchen sink when it was clogged last year. Worked great but super gross. The one we bought was just flat, somewhat flexible plastic with serrated edges. You could make a homemade, shorter version from an empty detergent bottle. It should look like a very long, skinny key.~

Whenever my bathtub drain gets slow it's usually a buildup of hair in the drain. I usually just reach in and pull up wads of hair (this is TMI, isn't it?) and that clears up the problem.

Not to endorse a chemical solution...but once you bail the water you could also try a drano product...the best I ever used was one that the bottle was divided down the center into two parts (with one chemical on one side and another on the other) and when you poured it into the drain the chemicals mixed and became activated. It was kind of gluppy so it sticks to the sides of the pipe while it works.

I wasn't able to clear the drain, so I had to wait for DH to get home. He snaked it out and now it's running great.

I was so happy to take a shower and will ty to prevent this in the future. I've read that 1 cup baking soda followed by 1 cup warm vinegar will help keep it clear.

I had that problem with my tub drain and I took a crochet hook and hooked the hair out! the stop doesn't come out so I had to fish around it. Glad to hear it's fixed!
