Question New to Site-Need Kitchen Appliances

    Hi
I am new to the site. I have to purchase a dishwasher and electric oven. Neither are functioning. I went to a local appliance store w/ a "Consumer Report" on a "best buy" for a certain dishwasher & oven. Of course the price in the store was $125-$200 above what CR suggests. The store owner would not budge on the prices. I realize the major chains cannot, but the small appliance store is able to. I was about to purchase a dishwasher, oven, and hood.

Any ideas? I am buying these for my mother whom is elderly & on a fixed income.
    Thanks,

Personally, I would head to another store, if you have the option. Most stores these days do price-matching, and I would check around with other small "mom & pop" shops before you bought from this one.

DH and I have made it a habit in the last year to stop shopping at retail chains ( I haven't even set foot in a wal-mart in 10 months...yay me) and start shopping at locally owned stores and we couldn't be happier.

You may end up having to pay more if they won't budge, but they often come with warranties and less hassle if something does go wrong. But I would try a different small appliance shop first and see if it is a trend in your area or if it is just the one shop.

If you are on a strict income and don't mind purchasing used, I would check out craigslist too. I have seen tons of appliances that are relatively new, being sold or given away becuase people are moving and can't take them with or they just moved into a new house that came with appliances and they already had their own! Just a thought, it would be a really inexpensive way to get them!

Try a scratch and dent store for big savings on new appliances.

Do you have a Mazer's near you? My brother found a new dishwasher there for $49.00! I hope you can shop around and find a better deal. Even Sears often has sales. My sister found a dented or scratched front-loading washing machine for a substantial discount there.

I've been circling our scratch and dent store here. The price difference is amazing and most of the "scratches and dents" are in very inconscpicous places, such as the side that will go up against the cabinets. If you can't find one nearby call someplace like GE and ask if they can tell you where one is located. Also HHGregg appliances (if you have one near you) appears to be a chain but I think it may be more of a franchise type thing as our local one is independently owned and "haggles". Anotherwords, there's not just one price and even the second or third price may not be the best you can get.

Have you checked out Craigslist in your area? There can be great deals on appliances that are not new, but have lots of life left in them. Also, stores like Lowes, Home Depot and even Best Buy sell floor models at a discount. I bought my freezer at BB years ago as a discontinued close out with a scratched side. Big savings. It takes some leg work, but it's worth it.
