I want to buy say..50lbs or more of sugar for my stockpile...what do you store it in to keep it from getting hard? Any down falls to stocking that much sugar? Thanks!

For regular white sugar I use a large food grade bucket that has a inner rubber seal it holds 50# of sugar or more.
I got my buckets at my local Wal-Mart from there bakery dept for free, I've heard some stores charge for these buckets some don't....It never hurts to ask.

I use those same buckets to store my flour. The good thing is you can store sugar longer than flour because flour gets old and doesn't function or taste right.

I asked about buckets at Sam's Club and they said they were required to recycle theirs.

Can it in metal cans. Use some desicant packs to prevent possible moisture.

You can rent the lid installer. Try your local LDS church for more info. They were helpfull when I asked them about food canning.

I've heard that if you place a slice of white bread in the container once a month for 24 hours ( and then remove it...don't forget about it...) your white sugar will stay granulated and not harden.

If you can get food grade buckets, you can buy lids to go on them. I bought some gamma lids for my buckets. I store everything that I buy in bulk in them. They work great. They are out in my garage and the mice and bugs don't get in the buckets.

We buy a lot of sugar at one time, although never as much as 50 pounds. We buy it in 4 and 5 pound bags when it is on sale. I like to stock up because I can a lot of jam. We just put the bags into old bags of the sort tortilla or potato chips come in and seal them on our vacuum sealer.

We bake enough that we have never had regular flour go bad, but you really need to refrigerate whole wheat flour unless you go through it really fast.
