When it rains, it pours....
and then the ceiling comes down! Not yet, but tonight as I was putting kids to bed, I noticed the edge of the ceiling on the outside wall had some peeling paint. Further investigation reveled damp drywall all along the ceiling. Looks like last winters ice dams did some damage. I guess the good news is that it is on the dormer part of our roof and only about a 6 foot section is damp and peeling. This comes on top of hospital and dentist bills that are piling up. We live in NE Wisconsin and snow is in the forcast this weekend. Can roofs be repaired in winter? Not really something we could do ourselves because this part of the roof is taller than any ladder we have or our neighbors have. Guess we will be getting a roofing contractor for Christmas!!! Too bad they aren't having a Black Friday sale.

Ouch!
Just hang in there! Sorry to hear about your roof expense during Christmas time.
I don't know too much about repairs, but would assume you can do them during winter season, I just wanted to support you.

At least you caught it in time!!!
We didn't.
DH and DS were in the living room when they heard a weird noise. DH remarked "I think there are mice in the attic" because he heard noises above. He realized 10 seconds before it happened that the ceiling was coming down! He grabbed our son by the arm, yanked him off the sofa and to safety as the livingroom ceiling collapsed. Our coffee table was destroyed, and several inches of 1970's blown in insulation was everywhere! What a mess!
And our ceiling was perfectly dry. It was over 50 years old, and we discovered, attached to the ceiling joists with simple nails, not screws.
Get that ceiling and roof looked at!!! And be careful!
