Roast?
I bought a roast to make in my crockpot that's quite a bit larger than we need. Can I cut it in half and freeze half? Or should I cook the whole thing and just freeze a cooked portion?
Thanks.

You could do it either way, but I would choose to cook the whole thing now. Easier for later when it just needs to be heated up.

There is no reason you couldn't do it either way. I would freeze the uncooked roast, but that is just me.

I always cut meat into serving size prior to cooking and freeze what we won't eat. You could cook it and freeze the remainder, however.

I like to cook the whole thing, refrigerate the unused part, and the next day when it's nice and firm, slice and freeze in serving portions.

I like cooking the whole thing then freezing what we dont use. We make veggie beef soup, beef fried rice, roast hash, chef salad.

Thanks. I was kind of curious as to whether there was some special way you have to cut the roast before you cook it. I guess it's normal to cut the roast apart before you cook it? I've never done that before. I just roast the whole thing. That's kinda why I was asking.

I usually buy a roast that's too big for one meal, cut it in half (or more), and freeze what I'm not going to cook now. One of the reasons for that is that my crockpot isn't really big, so the whole thing doesn't fit well anyway, especially if I cook potatoes & carrots with it. I also like to get a beef roast and a pork loin, cut them both in half (or more), and put both beef & pork in together.
Now, the best reason for me to freeze the uncooked portion is that I usually put the cooked leftovers in the fridge, use them maybe once, then forget about them (or never get in the mood for it) until it's gone bad. So it's more frugal for me to freeze it first rather than cook then freeze.Last edited by gardening momma; 12-15-2008 at 08:00 PM.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I used this guy's guide today to make pot roast and it turned out really nice.

Also, when you do it in the crockpot--it won't have that roasted browned look on the outside unless you put some oil or shortening in a skillet and brown it on all sides first. I like to do that for it too look more 'oven-roasted'. But it's optional.
