    Default No Montly Fee Long Distance Carriers

    Need to cancel my Verizon LD phone service for my land line (they charge $5.00 per month even if you don't make any calls) and find a zero per month carrier. (I use my cell for LD calls.)

    Thought I had found one:
    * No monthly fee
    * No federal taxes, etc (these charges are a percentage of your bill so a percentage of zero is zero)
    * No activation fee
    * So... the only charge would be 3 cents per minute if I needed to use my landline instead of the cell.
    * 99 cents if they mail you the monthly bill, zero if they e-mail it to you. (No brainer decision)
    -----> Problem: If you sign up for e-mail bill, you need to supply your credit card which gets a $10 charge. I interpret this as a $10 start up fee.

    Does anybody know of a completely zero per month? TIA for any advice you can give!

    I have no provider for long distance and therefor I have no charge for it...
    If I pick up the phone and dial a long distance number, then it says "you are unable to complete this call, blah blah blah"...
    I just dial one of those 10 10 numbers that charge a flat fee per minute. I generally use 10 10 987. This gets billed with my regular phone bill and I have no extra bills or unwanted charges.
    You DO NOT have to have a long distance provider on your phone service.
    This has worked for us for several years. One note, we do not use a lot of long distance from our land line.

    Thumbs up

    Thanks to everyone for their help! Either option sounds like a winner.

    @mhope: Does your calling card charge an "inactivity fee" that eventually eats away the balance? It's my understanding that many "money cards" (gift cards, calling cards) do this as a way of eventually taking all the money off the card.

    Again, thanks to all! My first visit to this forum indicates that you are all a pleasant and helpful bunch of folks.

    No it doesn't. I got my at Sam's Club. Also got one for my son at Target and there was no fee or lost inactivity. The cards I got where AT&T cards.
