How much are chocolate chips at these stores?
I know some of you keep lists of prices for various stores, so out of curiosity I'm wondering if anyone has an idea where to find the best price for chocolate chips. I'm going to be needing several bags for making thank-you gifts this summer and would like to save some money if possible. Brand is not an issue and I'll go with the cheapest real chocolate chips (no artificial flavored ones).
Our local stores have them on sale for about $2/12 oz. bag this week and I think I can do better. My options are limited:
~Wal-Mart. The nearest one is seventy miles away, but we're likely to be there in the next few months. We hate the place, but if they're significantly cheaper, we'd go there.
~Sam Club. The nearest is 110 miles away but we're likely to be in that town before July, too. We aren't members but could possibly use the free one-day pass someone posted here. If there is a big bag of chocolate chips, that would work fine because they will be taken out of the bags anyway, and we would just use up any left over.
~Super One. Nearest store is 50 miles away but we would pass through the town it's in if/when we went to either of the two towns previously mentioned.
~Cub Foods. Nearest is 110 miles, same town as Sam's Club.
~Buy locally at one of our two stores. That would be our preference. We're waiting for a sale, but would like to get an idea what the prices are elsewhere. Yes, we know prices do vary from store to store and also depending on region. I suspect we'll do just as well waiting for a better sale here in town.
We obviously wouldn't be driving to any of the out of town stores just to buy chocolate chips, but if we're going there anyway, we're wondering if it's worthwhile to wait. Basically, we're looking for a price to compare to our local stores.
TIA for info.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The prices are going to depend on more than just the particular store. Chocolate chips may cost more at my Walmart than at my grocery store here but could be the opposite for you. Prices vary geographically as well.
Having said all of that (which I hope made sense since I haven't had my morning coffee yet), I am hoping to go to Sam's this weekend using the free pass and will post the price info if I do.

Thanks. I know prices will vary based on many factors, just sort of curious what kind of prices others have found on this particular item.

I used to always buy Walmart's own brand of chocolate chips, but they have stopped producing them. Since then I have shopped around and found the best price per ounce by far at Sam's Club, on Nestle's chocolate chips. Sorry I can't give the exact price.

May I suggest you calling up these stores and asking for the price of their in house chocolate chips, or cheapest chocolate chips they have and what size the bag is. That way you would get more accurate pricing for your area, etc than probably any of us could give you.

I know this isn't one of the stores you mentioned, but I was shocked to see that a 24 oz package of chocolate chips (store brand) was $3.99 at Hannaford the other day.

For Sam's Club got to www.samsclub.com & choose your club, then type "chocolate chips" into the search engine. Around here a bag of Nestle chips, 72 oz goes for $8.19, Ghiradellie bittersweet baking chips, 3 lbs. goes for $7,87.
I'm assuming the sale you are talking about is for 12 oz bags, so it would cost you $12.00 for 72 oz of chips...it would be cheaper at Sam's."Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans." John Lennon

Thanks for the search tip. I checked the store in Hermantown, MN, which is closest to us at 110 miles. Their price for the Nestle's chips is $8.87. If we get there before the free pass expires at the end of March, maybe we'll stop in there and see if they've started treating customers any better than when we stopped in to look things over ten years ago.
Or maybe there'll be a local sale that's better than the recent one was.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In looking around Sam's site, I found a cool utensil holder for tailgating. So now I have two more projects, making one each for our RVs! Just what I needed, another project.
