Default Cleaning an old claw foot tub?

Anyone know if I can use borax on an old claw foot tub? Baking soda isn't cutting it & I know I can't use bleach or comet on it.

I don't know, but I'm jealous of your tub. We're renovating the master bath and I'm trying to convince DH to let me have a clawfoot.

Our old clawfoot tub had a hard enamal coating..and I remember my mom using comet in it all the time. I think it depends on what the tub is made of. Some of the refurbished tubs have a coating you can't use comet on.

I have an old claw foot tub. We use the liquid comet on it with no problems.

Try a mixture of ammonia, a drop or two of liquid soap and fill spray bottle.
Spray and let set, then wipe clean.

Don't be jealous of this one, LOL. It's old, the finish is dull & it's scratched up. It REALLY needs a new glaze & the outside is hunter green, LOL....

THNX for all the ideas. I'm tucking them away in my cleaning hints notebook. I used the borax yesterday with a scrubbie brush & it worked a charm. Now if I can get it looking nice til we can afford to reglaze it.....

In an older home we moved into, the lady of the house must have had stock in Comet or other powdered cleansers because she scrubbed the finish completely off the tub and it was more like sandpaper. Our kids were little back then and they would pitch a fit because of the scratchy tub. My mom came to the rescue.... She said to get a box of powdered alum (found in with the spices) and scrub the tub with that. The tub went from yellow to white and gone were the rust stains and it smoothed the texture. Thanks MOM! I did the powdered alum scrub a few times a year.

My Mom has an old clawfoot tub in her home. The best thing she uses is called "The Works" you can buy it at Walmart or the Dollar Tree and costs $1.12 per bottle. It is safe to use on them.

We're trying to go for something a little less caustic. I used to LOVE the works, got it at big lots. But now I know better, LOL
