I am considering getting a sandbox for the kids to play in... and I was wondering if any of you had one, how any of you kept the neighborhood cats out? I am not sure I will be able to consistently cover it - if cats get in it will it be ruined?

    TIA.

Yes, cats will use it as a cat box, we had one & kept it covered with a peice of plywood.

We have a Step 2 Sand and Water Table. I like it because the kids can't sit in it, it's raised off the ground so it doesn't kill the grass (we move it for mowing), it has a cover, it has an umbrella. You could use the water side for sand also (the kids always dump sand in the water section anyway). It was about $70 at K-Mart, I think. I shopped around and found the best price there. It holds up very well. I think this will be our second summer with it. It's been outside all winter and hasn't faded at all. It looks like it'll keep it's value well for resale when the kids grow out of it.

My kids were given one shaped like a castle. The lid pops off and they can run cars over the little "roads". We have had it about 5 years now and it is still nice. We do have to put a couple bricks on the lid to keep the wind from blowing it off.

Check garage sales. I found one of those turtle shaped ones at a garage sale for maybe $1 and they gave me all the sand that they still had left in bags. It came with a lid. I didn't worry about it during the day, but everynight I would just make sure I put the lid back on.

We also got a Step2 one that was described above with the umbrella, only ours was just a sand table. I found it at Aldi's for maybe $40. It worked really well. Again, I just made sure I covered it when we were done with it.

We bought a sand turtle brand new for $20 over almost 15yrs ago. It's still going strong. It's the Little Tykes brand.

My girlfriend had an issue with neighborhood cats using her kids sandbox as a litter box...so she purchased one of those large dog kennels and put the sandbox in it...kept the cats out and the kids in.
