flip over some buckets and throw a board on top, cover with a table cloth or sheet. got a pull behind trailer? you lay your stuff out on that. I hate picking thru stuff on the ground. It hurts my back. Got some folding lawn chairs? Do the same with them. Throw a board or piece of plywood on them and a cover of some kind.

Go on freecycle and ask to borrow tables. I lend mine out all the time.

two cents...
The idea about making tables is good, if you have the raw materials to do it. You can use your dining table and outdoor patio table, too, as long as you make it clear they are not for sale. Borrowing tables is good, too. Ask friends, a church, or even a local school if you plan on doing it on the weekend. If you have a lot of adult clothes, just hang 'em up with hangers on your open garage door (on the lip) and display them that way (keep your hangers when you sell an item). Kids clothes can be put into a box, most people don't mind hunting for kid's stuff. If you have mostly big-ticket items (furniture, etc.) you might be able to get away with some stuff on the ground. But if the majority of the items are small-ish, I wouldn't bother. Most people would just drive by without stopping to crouch down and look.

You can use anything that is flat to use as a table.
I've even used the glass out of our screen door, propped up on saw horses!
Just stay away from laying blankets on the ground for clothing. People do that all the time here, then lay the clothes out on the blankets on the ground, and I hate bending over to look through them! I would think you'd have better luck with little things if they are closer to waist level!

Put the toys on the ground on blankets.
Put other things in storage tubs.
Clothes that hang put on clotheslines.
If your selling bookcases go ahead and display books and knicknacks on them.
Put furniture in groups.
I don't use tables. I keep cash on me in a fanny pack.
